North Aurora, Illinois is a town in McHenry County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. North Aurora was platted in 1847. It is named after Aurora Township in Wayne County, Michigan. The first settler in what is now North Aurora was Daniel Wimer. He and his wife Lydia founded a log cabin on the banks of the Chicago River in November 1847. Daniel's brother-in-law John Cook also arrived in October 1848 and began to farm around North Aurora. By September 1850 there were six people living in North Aurora: three farmers and three loggers; all were Native Americans who had come from the Northwest Territories (now Saskatchewan). In 1854 John Cook bought of land from Colonel Joel Seligman for $2 per acre (20 acres). He built a grist mill on the west side of the Chicago River near where he currently lives. In 1860 Abraham Browning erected a frame building on land he owned east of present day South Avenue to serve as a store and post office. That year George Weadock arrived with his family from Canada and started farming around present day Elmwood Avenue/Broadway south of today's village square. In 1865 Isaac Haas settled near what is now Elmwood Avenue/Broadway while Peter Fritsche settled just north of Mrrain Road across current day Prairie Drive/Route 22 which became Elmwood Avenue/Broadway after Fischer bought most of neighboring Indianola Township from its original occupants during that same year – one group consisting mostly of headmen or chiefs referred to as "the Five O'Clock Men" because they stopped playing their traditional game known as "the hourglass" midway through dinner hours) . As part of this merger, North Aurora became one of two villages in Cook County that had their own police department. In 1952, the city annexed portions of Elmhurst and Hoffman Estates to become a single municipality with its ownPolice Department again.
