North Aurora, Illinois is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Numerous other pioneers followed Kanker to populate this new territory west of Chicago's normal limits: Edward Cady, Fenton Christensen (father of engineer Ferdinand Christensen), John Ahern (the first postmaster in Kane County), George Stephenson (the first locomotive driver in Kane County), Augustus Deutschmann (a German immigrant who bought much land along the Fox River near present day South Holland), Samuel Haines (a farmer and fur trader who settled near what is now North Aurora) and others. During its early years as a small town site northwest of Chicago's Loop business district some businesses operated out of homes: Epps Mercantile Store on State Street opposite where Union Depot now stands; Pfeffer & Son tannery on First Avenue between Dearborn and Oak Streets; Junker Bros., druggists; Ladd & company printers; Wohlgemuth grocery store located at Erie Boulevard and State Street; alluvial gold mines were discovered soon after incorporation with prospectors streaming into the village looking for any nuggets they could find while heavy equipment rumbled through the areas often leaving streams covered with Mining claim tags Messrs O'Brien hardware store operator Arthur O'Brien found several large veins totaling more than 500 ounces each when he drilled three shafts down mountain stream side under property now used by North Aurora High School students playing football during winter recess 2009-2010

In 1865, a new courthouse was built and it is still in use today. In 1870, the first electric streetlights were installed in North Aurora. The town became a village in 1897 and then a city in 1907.
