Gun targets have been a part of North Aurora, Illinois for over 100 years. The first target was made in 1881 by Captain John D. Butler and his son-in-law, George L. Harkness. Captain Butler died in 1907 and Mr. Harkness continued to make targets until his death in 1961. The first gun club in North Aurora was formed in 1912 by J. H. White and Fenton Ransom. The club met at the home of Mrs. White and operated out of her garage until 1916 when it moved to the old Masonic Temple which is now used as acommunity center. In 1938, the Armoury Club organized a competition to find the best design for a target rifle silhouette using lead shot only with an offhand hold that could be fired from any position on the bow or stern of the ship while underway (the “Armoury Targets”).The results were disappointing and no one ever came close to matching Captains Butler’s original design (the “Butler Target”). However, over time different clubs adopted their own designs which can still be seen today at various locations throughout North Aurora (e.g., Dutch Reformed Church"). One of the most notable competitions taking place around this time was held at Wabash Hills Rifle Range south of town on I-55 between Rosemount Road and Osterburg Road where teams from all over Illinois competed culminating with a final round against each other on November 9th, 1941 scoring points based upon shooting accuracy rather than weight or type of ammunition used (the “Wabash Hills Targets Competition”). This event has since been documented as one of the biggest annual events in town history with scores reported up to 85% accurate! While there are many different types of target rifles available today, including both air guns and shotguns, those designed specifically for NRA sanctioned shoots continue to be popular due their simplicity (e.g., plastic models) as well as their ability to adjust focus on moving targets; making them perfect for indoor use or outdoor competition!

Polk as a small clearing on the banks of the Little Sangamon River. The name comes from North Aurora Creek which flows through the town. North Aurora quickly became known for its mills and agricultural production which made it an important center for commerce in Kane County. In 1853, North Aurora was incorporated as a village and remained so until 1959 when it became a town under the new municipality law passed by the Illinois General Assembly. Today, North Aurora offers unique opportunities to learn about its rich history while experiencing its vibrant community spirit. With over 20 businesses including four hospitals, cultural attractions include two movie theaters and three restaurants, shopping options are abundant and include several stores within walking distance of each other as well as numerous smaller boutiques throughout the township. North Aurora is a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. North Aurora is located on the banks of the Des Plaines River, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Chicago. North Aurora was platted in 1847 as part of the Town of West Aurora by commissioners from Cook County and Kane County. It became a village in 1907. The town's name may be derived from "aurora" meaning "the dawn." In 1870, John A. Wirth founded what would become Wirth's Mill on the stream that flows through North Aurora. In 1903, George Fenton opened the first grocery store in Northwestern Illinois at 5th and Elm Streets in North Aurora. At its height, Wirth's Mill employed up to 120 people and produced flour for local markets as well as exporting to Canada and other parts of the world. On July 1, 1912 – one year after World War I ended – North Aurora became a city under Municipal Law No. 1457 with a population of 2,000 residents! On December 6th 1915– just one year after becoming an incorporated city – North Aurora had its first fire sale! This event marked an important milestone for our community because it demonstrated to all who cared about it that we were capable of handling our own affairs!
The first settlers in North Aurora were the Pecks who arrived in 1812. The town was named after John Pecks, a Revolutionary War soldier and landowner. The first store opened in 1824. Today, North Aurora is a bedroom community with a population of over 50,000 people.
