North Aurora is a city in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. North Aurora was founded in 1838 as a village and became an incorporated town in 1912. It is located on the southern border of Kane County. In 1916, North Aurora merged with neighboring Plainfield to form one municipality. The two towns had a combined population of 1,572 at the 2000 census. The Village of North Aurora first organized on December 12, 1838 under the name "Waterville". On March 14, 1840, it changed its name to "North Aurora". On October 10 of that year, it was made an incorporated town by Illinois General Assembly bill No. 146-1. On January 3, 1912 North Aurora merged with Plainfield Township to form one municipality with a combined population of 1,572 residents. At that time both towns had been part of Cook County since 1847 when they were taken from Lake Forest Township within Chicago's boundaries (the merger date is unknown). As the township and city grew together there came about ever-growing tensions between them over issues such as land use and zoning; this culminated in what is now known as the North Aurora City Council Wars which began in earnest in the early 1960s and continue to this day. These conflicts led directly to some high-profile firings from either side - including those of then Mayor Gerry Tunstall and City Clerk Tom Watson - during what has come to be known as "The Great municipal council fire" (and also seen as one of America's earliest mayoral races). Overall though these disputes ultimately failed to produce any tangible results other than increased animosity between the two cities – something that still exists today albeit less overtly."
On North Aurora, Illinois, the first store was opened in 1871. The town was named after Samuel J. North, a senator from Illinois and the founder of the Northwestern University. The first post office was established in 1872. By 1907, there were over 30 businesses in town. In 1929, the first high school was opened in town and it remained an all-girls school until boys started attending in 1975. In 2006, a new elementary school was built and it remains an all-boys school today
