North Aurora, Illinois is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,819 at the 2010 census. North Aurora is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It has been called "The Village" since 1881. The village had a school district and an opera house until it was dissolved in 1987 and most of its assets sold to the city of Chicago for use as public housing. In 2004, the City of North Aurora took control of the land from Chicago and renovated it into mixed-use development including retail, office space, and apartments. North Aurora started as a small settlement on the east side of Kane County by two brothers named John Gee and Isaac Harmon in 1881. The village was established around a schoolhouse that had been built in 1868 by George Hennepin for his family members who lived near what is now Loop Road (now West Side Highway). By 1907 there were over 150 people living in North Aurora with just five stores and one hotel as their primary economic activities. On April 15, 1888, North Aurora became the first town in Kane County when it voted to incorporate under state law. In 1904 North Aurora's school district was disbanded due to budget cuts by then-Governor Daniel Walker and its students were transferred to Cook County schools instead. In 1987 all assets of School District No 178 were taken over by City of Chicago for use as public housing units which quickly deteriorated because no one wanted to live there because they lacked basic amenities including indoor plumbing or hot water facilities which made life difficult for many residents who could not afford tear down their homes or replace them with proper new ones due to budget constraints within city limits at that time. The redevelopment project finally reopened in 2004 after being closed for many years due to lack of funding from both localities/counties along with state & federal assistance during the Great Recession era when joblessness skyrocketed across Illinois & much of northern Indiana following Lehman Brothers' collapse & subsequent global recession . Today’s community began developing on land donated by late Mayor James Jaffe Sr., father of current Mayor James Jaffe III following his death on December 3rd 2009 after serving 14 terms on Kankakee Township Council starting in 1978 followed by 12 terms on Northwest ward council beginning November 6th 1966 thru May 17th 2006; he also served as Vice President Pro Tem from January 7th 2005 thru December 3rd 2009; he served 4 terms consecutively as Mayor pro tem through May 17th 2006; his son James Jaffe III succeeded him upon his death effective December 3rd 2009
