North Aurora, Illinois is a city located in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,827 at the 2010 census and it is the smallest town in Kane County by population. It was founded in 1837 and named for Aurora, Colorado. North Aurora is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of North Aurora was organized on December 15, 1837 from parts of what were then called Will County and Cook County. The first postmaster was John Larkin. There were only four families living in the village when it was organized: Pendleton family, Goodrich family, McGrath family and Smith family (the last two being added to the village after its incorporation). When Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Rock Island Arsenal in October 1847 he found that about one-third of all artillery pieces had been destroyed or badly damaged during the Mexican–American War; most of this equipment had been captured from Mexico by General Winfield Scott's army as prizes. To replace these guns Grant ordered Captain James Fenton to build him a battery of six 12-pounder smoothbore cannons which he christened "Grant's Battery". When completed on November 17th Grant gave it to Fenton with these words: "Here let them be – now go into action!" Fenton hastily mounted his cannons and opened fire on a group of Mexicans who had approached his position unauthorized. His shots killed nineteen men and three women before they could disperse; this victory helped rally support for General Grant's campaign against Mexico. As a result of this skirmish north Aurora received its name from President James Kansa who later donated land to form North Aurora Park (now University Place). Aurora also became home to one of Illinois' leading meatpackers during this time period – Mr. & Mrs J H Murphy’s Meatpacking Company operated out OF their warehouse on State Street between Third Avenue West and First Avenue West until 1953 when they moved upstate to South Holland because they found no other market for their product hereabouts! Mr & Mrs Murphy are buried at Elmwood Cemetery next door to their company’s original plant where you can still see some evidence remaining dating back to those early days! In 1947 Northwestern Bell Telephone erected its pole near Third Avenue West & First Ave Western telephone exchange giving future residents an idea about where the exchange sat physically but no Store frontage existed until 1957 when an addition extended 3 stories west along First Ave Western extending across Third AvenueWest continuing past today’s demolished building just southwest corner Of said intersection . This new addition included new Residential Development built within sight line overlooking entire Marketplace business district known today as “The Loop” As Northwestern Bell Telephone phased out their services many residents relocated away from downtown over time resulting in crime rates soaring especially during late night hours however thanks InPartiality To A Gang Related Incident At That Location A Police Department eventually Was Established And Still functions Today !!
