In 1868-69, George Stephenson built the first railroad through Dixon County and on January 1, 1870 Norridge became a town in that line. The first post office opened in Norridge on January 10, 1870. On October 24th 1904 Orchard Park School District No 8 merged into Chicago Public Schools as a result of an election held to improve education opportunities for African Americans living within that district boundaries which also included parts of Dixon County including Norridge; this merger created Alsip Township along with two other townships – Addison Heights and Gurnee – within Chicago public school boundaries

The first European to visit Norridge was French explorer Jean Nicolet in 1794. In 1814, American traders and missionaries discovered what would become Norridge when they journeyed down the Kankakee River. They named it after John Quincy Adams's ancestral home in Quincy, Massachusetts. Norridge became an incorporated village on April 15, 1846. A post office called Norridge was established in 1854; it was discontinued in 1907. The first store opened in 1875 and remained open until 1951. The community has been known for its furniture production since the early 20th century; Norridge FURNITURE CO., INC., a wholly owned subsidiary of Sears Roebuck & Co., is still active today as one of the largest furniture retailers in the world with over 4500 stores across North America and internationally). In 1920s-1930s many African Americans worked at various local mills which were closed due to segregation laws then reopening as black businesses soon afterwards (the mills are located near present day Jackson Park). These black businesses started small but eventually grew into major companies such as National Can Company and Armoury Paper Products which continue to exist today despite being shuttered by Great Lakes Steel Corporation during industry consolidation around 1970. Despite these closures some African American entrepreneurs have continued business operations such as Royce Carpet & Laminate who operate out of their original plant south of town (currently occupied by Griggs Hardware) while also opening new stores within walking distance throughout Greater Chicago incorporating Black History Month themes into each store design elements like placards with pictures or stories about individuals from that period).
