In 1847, a group of Norwegian immigrants started a farmstead called Hvidtfeldt Manor near present-day Norridge. The Norwegian name for this place was "Norrød" which means "the northerly direction." In 1871, one year after Norway became an independent country, its parliament created an agricultural district within Cook County called "Norrød", with Norridge as its center. This agricultural district served asNorridge's economic and social center until it was absorbed into Cook County in 1932.
