Norridge is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,442 at the 2010 census. It is the southernmost city on the Chicago metropolitan area and part of the Chicago–Naperville–Elgin Combined Statistical Area. Norridge was founded in 1847 by John Norridge and his wife Elisabeth. They named their town after another pioneer settler, Richard Norridge, who had arrived from Kentucky in 1833. The town became a village in 1868 and then a city in 1893. The name "Norridge" comes from two English words: "nor" meaning east (the original settlement lay to the east of present-day Norridge Avenue), and "rive" meaning stream or river bed which ran through it. The first store opened in 1865, when only one block of downtown was developed. By 1870 there were three stores and twenty-four residents living in what is now Norridge's central Business District (CBD). In 1872 an electric street railway system began service; today's Northwestern Ave serves as its artery with four stops: Howard St., Wabash Ave., La Salle St., and State St.–now called Michigan Ave.). In 1895 Mayor Harry Seibert dedicated what is now Western Ave.–now Roosevelt Rd.–to City Hall as part of efforts to modernize downtown streetscape following years of planning by Superintendent of Streets Harry Norris during Seibert's time as mayor. In 1907 construction began on Roosevelt Road which connected streets north/southwest of City Hall with those east/west; today this road forms much of the eastern edge of Norridge CBD . The economic decline brought about by World War II led to problems for residents such as shortagesof food products, water supplies etc.; however these issues were resolved during post-war years with various development opportunities available including housing developments along Roosevelt Rd.. During the 1960s growth resumed along Northwestern Ave., resulting in more commercial buildings being erected along that corridor while other areas saw slower growth due to changing demographics such as retirement communities near Lake Michigan instead of jobs closer to Loop traffic corridors . Today many businesses have closed or relocated within Chicago but several still operate such as L&L Pizza & Pasta located at 7th & Randolph Streets just northwest corner onto Park Dr.; also longstanding local institution The Grapes at 511 S Clinton has been reincarnated under new ownership with new seating inside and out since 1978
