Today Norridge is known for its outdoor activities - Badminton Club has been around since 1881; Ice Skating Association original rink opened in 1951; Men’s Wrestling Team won state championships in 1966 & 1984; Women’s Bowling League championship in 1978). Norridge is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 2,693 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Norridge was founded by Nicholas Norridge and his family in 1855 as a small farming community on the banks of the Kankakee River. In 1865, when the railroad arrived in this area, Norridge became one of its first towns. By 1924, it had reached its peak population with 1,500 people and had incorporated as a village. The following year saw the opening of an electric power plant which made Norridge one of the first communities in Illinois to receive electricity from hydroelectric power sources. AsNinety-Nine Percent Invisible: A History of Chicago's South Side (2009), pp 129-134 says "In 1929 [Norridge] became one of twenty villages in Cook County to adopt a resolution endorsing Prohibition...The Village Board voted 5-0 to prohibit liquor sales within their boundaries." According to historian David Wesselstein: "Cook County began prohibition enforcement on July 1st [1929], nine days after Norridge’s Village Board Resolution went into effect." In 1930 there were over 100 Temperance Bands operating throughout Cook County - most prominently in North Shore suburbs like Oak Lawn and Hinsdale - but only two Norridians were arrested for breaking prohibition laws that year: local man John Purdy and Canadian immigrant Harry Soudanowsky. Both men were released on bail pending trial; however, Purdy subsequently travelled across America and set about marketing his banal repeal act while Soudanowsky continued drinking alcohol until he died aged 83 years old from cirrhosis caused from overindulging too much during Prohibition). From then until 1933 all liquor sales within NORRIDGE'S municipal limits were prohibited except for special occasions sanctioned by ordinance or granted exclusive privilege by Club authorities (like Mother’s Day). This legal monopoly held through “the Great Depression” until
Norridge was founded in 1847 by John Norridge and his wife, Eliza. The town was named for John's father, who had settled there in 1834. In the early years of its existence, Norridge was a small farming community with few businesses. However, as the population grew and businesses opened up in the area, Norridge began to develop into a local center for trade and commerce. Norridgewood Cemetery is located in Norridge and is one of the oldest cemeteries in Illinois. It first opened its gates toilers on November 25, 1854. The Cemetery has been caretakeried by the same family since that date.
