Norridge's name comes from the Norridge family, which settled there in 1795. In 1815, Norridge became the county seat of Cook County after being moved from Chicago to that location by order of General James K. Polk. The first post office in Norridge was established on December 6, 1815, and opened under the name "Newburgh". It closed on July 1, 1865 due to lack of mail service within the new county seat. In 1847, following the abolition of slavery in Illinois, Norridge voted to become an anti-slavery community and supported Abraham Lincoln during his successful run for President in 1860. After Lincoln's election victory over John F Kennedy at the hands of angry Marylanders (norridges were much more pro-Lincoln than most towns in Cook County), many residents decided to move away from Chicago following his inauguration and into what would eventually become known as 'the Great Lakes Region'. As early as 1854 local farmers had started raising corn and wheat on large estates adjoining Norridge Lake; however it took until 1865 when a railroad arrived through town to bring these operations fully online
