Norridge was founded in 1837 by John Norridge and his wife Eliza Hagerty. The name derives from "norridge" meaning "a bend in a river." The first store opened in 1838 and the first post office was established in 1840. In 1848, Norridge became a village and on November 6, 1850 its charter was amended to grant it town status. On February 15, 1954 the village merged with Norridge Township to form one municipality. The community has experienced several changes over time including growth of industry such as manufacturing and farming; however, retail services have been the mainstay of its economy for most of its history. After years of decline during the 1970s and 1980s due to aggressive marketing by local businesses led by then-Mayor Dick Simpson (D), Norridge began experiencing an upswing beginning in the 1990s which has seen significant development within the community including new housing developments as well as improvements to public transportation options making it easier for residents to get around town. Today Norridge remains a vibrant community with strong economic ties to its larger neighbor cities including Chicago and Willingboro Heights/Arlington Heights - both located just south of town - while also boasting some unique attractions that set it apart from other small towns around this area: For example, there are no schools within walking distance of any residents so children must attend nearby public schools or travel northward on Route 64 which bisects town boundaries; similarly, there is no shopping center within easy reach so residents must go elsewhere for their needs; yet despite these limitations, many people continue to live here because it offers something different than what they find anywhere else around this area: A strong sense of community identity that enables people to work together towards common goals without feeling like they need to leave their home environment for anything other than family values
