In 1938, following World War II, the city's population reached 20,000 people and it became one of the most populous cities in Illinois. In 1998, Norridge merged with neighboring village of Calumet City to form a larger city called Chicago-Norridge-Calumet City (C-N-C). The merged municipality has an estimated total population of over 381,500 people as of 2019. Norbridge Township was organized on February 14th 1839 from parts of Calumet City and West Allis township by John Norrington and James Norris with platting done on July 15th 1839 under the name "The Townships". On October 8th 1840 Abraham Lincoln signed an order for 640 lots for $10 each to be distributed among the citizens who voted on November 2nd 1840 within 4 days after his inauguration as President of the United States which included many new townships that were formed during this time including: Vernon Heights (now Elmhurst), Arlington Heights (now Addison), Cicero Heights (now Woodlawn), Plainfield Township (now Aurora), Mount Prospect Township (now Northbrook), Wheaton Hills Township (now Elgin). As more townships were organized during this time there were more names given to these areas like: Oak Park Township '40', River Forest '41', Lafayette Park '42' etc., but they all share one common history; they all came about because of land grants made during George Washington's presidency."
