Normal, Illinois is a town in Will County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,471 at the 2010 census. Normal is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Normal was founded on December 12, 1836, by George S. Lane and his family as a small town in what is now Will County. It began as a farming community with five stores and two homes. In 1838, the first post office was established in Normal and it remained in operation until 1886. In 1849, Normal became the seat of government for normal school district No. 1 which included present-day Springfield Township and parts of other townships in Will County. The territorial legislature authorized the creation of a county for normal school district No. 1 which would include present-day Leroy and Normal Townships east of State Street (now west side streets between Michigan Avenue and Ashland Avenue). On February 8, 1850,normal school districts Nos 2-5 were created with land located east of State Street within modern-day Park Ridge Township (then part of old Cook County) to form what is now North Central Illinois Regional School District No. 9 (NCIRSD #9). The name "Normal" was chosen because it sounded like an English word meaning "a place where one could farm." The original town plat (dated November 16, 1843) shows that there were only three homes in town – one being owned by George Salland who ran a general store next to the courthouse square during its early years; another home belonged to Capt Samuel Wells; while still others were rented from local farmers or bought outright by settlers when they arrived in town during the 1840s/50s primarily from New England backgrounds such as Nathaniel Bangor from Connecticut or John Winthrop Channing from Rhode Island/New Bedford Colony etc., It should be noted that at no time did anyone own more than 5% of any given parcel within normal boundaries until after1886 when some landowners started selling their holdings back home again once they had achieved some level of profitability or stability within their new communities.. .
