By 1900 Normal had grown sufficiently that it attracted attention from outside sources such as investment bankers who desired access to a growing city located just south of downtown Chicago near important transportation routes including State Street and Randolph Avenue (now Michigan Avenue). In 1902 developer Charles Wrigley purchased 2 million acres (10 km2) east of Chicagoland along I-90 for $50 million which would eventually become McCormick Place – now home to several thousand businesses including Sears Roebuck & Co., IBM, Apple Inc., Motorola Mobility and many others – creating one of Americas largest business communities (though this area has since shrunk significantly due to suburbanization).
