The Fox River forms much of the municipal boundary between Niles and McHenry County to its east; within city limits it flows through parks and open spaces donated by businessman George Wirthlin near his downtown business district on the river's north bank. The river also serves as a natural water supply for many homes and businesses along its course. Niles was founded by Danish immigrants Niels Jørgensen Nilsen (1768-1836) and Johanne Jacobsdatter Dahl (1792-1864). They arrived in what is now Illinois around 1800 as part of an effort by Denmark to gain possession of territory west of the Great Lakes that had been taken over by France during their war with England over North American independence. After purchasing 640 acres (248 hectares) Herefordshire Township from John Hennepin in 1818, they started building houses on what would later become known as First Street NE – today's Main Street – creating what is now Niles’ central business district (CBD). In addition to farming land hereabouts, both men were involved in local politics: Jørgensen was elected Mayoralty judge for Cook County twice before resigning due to ill health at age 50; Dahl served two terms as State Representative from Winnetka before dying young at 44 years old while trying unsuccessfully to win election to Congress following her husband’s death just three months earlier…. The area around present day First Street NE became densely populated with small family farms beginning around 1830 when steamboats began running upriver from Chicago carrying goods down the Fox River….. By 1860 only about 10 percent of residents lived outside City limits; most residents continued living inside blocks bounded by First Street NE & Kedzie Avenue NW until annexation into Chicago occurred almost 150 years later…. Census data available online shows that population density peaked near 1950s levels (~250 people/km²) but has slowly declined since then (-15% annually since 2000). Accordingly, when Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced plans for renewal or expansion of Northwest Indiana Drive starting in 2017 he included plans for new housing development adjacent thereto within City Limits……… [such redevelopment] will create more than 1,500 jobs across several dozen different industries slated for constructionphase over 8+ years………….. The project will cost ~$1 billion dollars including associated infrastructure investments such as higher speed lanes connecting I-290 & I-94W with Northwestern Indiana Drive becoming “the economic engine room” serving not only DowntownChicago but all southside neighborhoods making up “South Side Cluster”…. [This redevelopment] constitutes another major step forward towards meeting community needs while preserving extant neighborhood character

With this victory under their belt and reinforcements pouring intoicago from all over North America (including Union troops), Lincoln called for more troops to be sent westward to help protect what remained of our Union after Abraham Lincoln’s successful reelection campaign against Andrew Johnson in November 1862
Niles was founded in 1829 by Congregationalist ministers, who named it in honor of General David Niles, commander of the Union army during the American Civil War. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 10,000 people. In 1841, Niles became the first incorporated municipality in Illinois. In 1865, the town was destroyed by a tornado that destroyed most of downtown. The damage was so extensive that it took many years for Niles to build up again. In 1949, Niles became home to the world's first traffic light at its intersection with Randolph Street. The intersection is still used today as a crossing point for local buses and drivers travelling between downtown and Northwest Side neighborhoods. In 1961, Niles received national attention when it served as one of two towns in Illinois chosen to be twin cities – along with Peoria – on Stroudsburg University's new campus in Pennsylvania. This designation made Niles one of the most popular tourist destinations in Illinois for students studying at universities outside of Chicago or Springfield. Today, Niles is an important community hub located within close proximity to several major metropolitan areas including Chicago, Springfield, and Stroudsburg University. It has also become known for its rich history and culture which has been preserved through its numerous museums and events throughout the year.
