Niles, Illinois is a city in Niles County, Illinois, United States. The population was 37,844 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in what is now Niles were James Hickey and his family who arrived in 1806. William Kincaid and his family settled in the area in 1814. The first post office in Niles was established on November 1, 1837. The town of Niles was platted by John Silliman on December 12, 1838. The first store opened for business on January 14, 1840. On July 1, 1850, the village of Niles incorporated as a city under the name of "Nile". The Chicago & Northwestern Railway built a line from Bloomington to Niles through the town on October 6, 1855. On November 11 of that year, the Chicago & Northwestern Railway extended its line to Sycamore Junction and became part of the Union Pacific Railroad system mainline network. On December 17th of that year (1857), after years of debate and planning by mayor James Shields and other officials including George Stephenson Concourse School which would open two weeks later (January 8) - City Council approved an ordinance giving exclusive rights to railroad interests to build four tracks within one block between First National Bank Place (now Wells Fargo Center) and Second National Bank Place - construction began immediately upon approval with work continuing until May 15th following which all traffic was routed around this new location turning east at Sycamore Junction onto Union Pacific tracks heading southbound towards Chicago via State Street before rejoining Northern lines much further north near Wacker Drive
Niles is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 97,617 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Illinois and second-largest within Cook County after Chicago. The name Niles originally referred to a small stream that ran through the town. The first permanent settler in what is now Niles was Nicholas de la Halle who arrived around 1680. By 1811, there were more than 100 people living in Niles. In 1817, John Stephenson bought 7 acres of land near present day downtown Niles from Nicholas de la Halle for $2 per acre. This area became known as Stephenson's Corner because it housed the first store in Niles and served as a transportation hub for the surrounding areas. In 1837, Nathan Hale moved his family to Niles from Buffalo, New York and opened what is now called Hale's Tavern on State Street which later became The National Bank of America building and then First National Bank of America campus headquarters before being purchased by JPMorgan Chase & Co.. In 1911, J P Morgan built his home on Main Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets; this house still stands today as part of JPMorgan Chase Tower. In 1916, General Electric purchased 4 acres adjacent to present day Northwestern University's Kane Hall for their new engineering school; this site would become home to GE Power Plant No 1 (now operated by RWE) before becoming part ofUEHCO’s electrical plant complex known as Energy Park Complex (now owned by Montero Energies). In 1925, Edmond McCormick established an agricultural research station at McCormick Field located east of downtown Niles; this station remains active today as McCormick Research Center/ grounds include a visitor center and research laboratories designed by starchitects VeseyThomas Associates with support from NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View California . During World War II many businesses closed due to wartime production quotas but reopened after the war ended when American companies were allowed back into Germany . After 1945 many factories closed again but reopened including Hawley Corporation which had been shut down during World War II . On October 30th 1954 Mayor James Buchanan announced that all credits outstanding on bank notes worth $5 or more had been redeemed leading to an increase in values up to $10 per note making them legal tender over night creating most paper money history since Nixon devalued them
