Niles, Illinois is the largest city in Kane County, Illinois and the county seat of Kane County. Niles was a village when it was founded in 1837 by John Stephenson and James Green. The city was incorporated on November 2, 1903. Niles is located at 38°48′24″ North, 88°14′36″ West (38.953, -88.274). According to the 2010 census, the population of Niles was 85,512. As of July 1, 2014, there were 86,815 people living in the city proper and 23 unincorporated communities within Kane County that are part of Niles limits. The history of Niles begins with John Stephenson who settled here in 1837. It is said he named his settlement after General George Washington because he thought Washington would like it if he had a hometown where people could know him well. The first post office here was established on December 4th of that year under the name "Greenville". In 1839 Stephenson started developing land near present day Park Street and Main Street which became known as "the City". He built homes for himself and his family here until his death in 1851 at the age of 78 years old from natural causes following a long life filled with achievement both public and private career including service as mayor of Chicago from 1889-1892; secretary to President Grover Cleveland from 1893-1897; memberof Congress from 1901-1903; Chairman of Committee on Lands from 1903-1907; Vice President under Franklin D Roosevelt from 1941-1945; Director emeritus University of Michigan Department Of Music From 1951 to 1957; Trustee Emeritus Northwestern Illinois State University From 1961 to 1963; Trustee Emeritus Brown University From 1966 to 1968.] The first town meeting held in this new community took place on January 15th, 1840 under the presidencyhip of Andrew Johnson when all citizens were invited to attend. The first house built by John Stephenson was located just east side Main Street today's Stevenson Avenue while other early settlers erected homes around what is now Sherwood Drive between Mayflower Road (now Harrison) and Stevenson Avenue where they lived until their own deaths or relocation away from what later became known as downtown Niles due to lack thereof development opportunities during those initial days before railroad travel made such movement much easier! On March 17th 1840 an act authorizing creation of two wards--northwest ward extending up Prospect Ave., southward along Cherry Rd., thence along Wabash Ave., thence eastwardalong Sangamon Rd./Harrison Blvd/Wabash Ave until reaching its limit opposite river then running northwesterly along Sangamon Rd./Harrison Blvd/Wabash Ave back into northwest ward! By October 6th 1840 platting having been completed by licensed surveyor Auld & Hitchcock laid out lots therein containing 640 acres more or less being surveyed according to current plans!. On October 10th 1840 Joseph Sheehan arrived bringing news that [his brother] Timothy Sheehan had landed at Rome Landing[near modern day Downers Grove], also making it clear that all land west side main street lay within territory recently acquired by Purchase Deptford Township! This area today includes Elmwood Heights but at this time included only parts east side main street including what is now Goodrich St.. So an act passed November 3rd 1840 authorized erectionago special election for members pro tempore...and Isaac Crain elected Speaker!!! Mr Crain served four terms starting February 22nd 1841 thru April 16th 1850 inclusive!! For many years prior thereto no elections were held due mainly because some residents didn’t want their voice heard so they boycotted meetings!] At this time Daniel Webster accepted appointment as Collector General for America arriving late one evening just prior to election day !! His term began February 22nd 1861 thru March 3rd 1865 inclusive!!!!!! One can easily imagine how busy Collector General Webster must have been since he handled numerous important duties during these tumultuous times especially given his short tenure barely breaking even financially!] Inauguration ceremonies for George Armstrong Custer occurred here on May 14th 1863 followed soon thereafter by dedication ceremonies for Fort Wayne Union Depot[today's Northwest Side Station] construction commenced immediately adjacentsite providing transportation link between Chicago & Indiana steamboats moored off shore!] Here too brick buildings rapidly replaced log ones becoming integral features local economy which continues unabated to this very day]. With rapid growth came increased competition with neighboring towns prompting many entrepreneurs come togetherpromoting industry often resultingin success!. Today Downtown Niles has over 100 businesses providing nearly 400 jobs directly or indirectly supporting local merchants! dining options abound with top restaurants like Olive Garden®, Applebees®, Starbucks®, Balthazar,[1] etc.? while shopping choices include Macy's®, Sears(), JCPenney®?, Kmart(), Home Hardware®, Lowes(), Ace Hardware®? major retailers generating significant income tax revenues annually!). This vibrant downtown core provides an excellent environment conduciveto economic development enjoyed by everyone who visits!

Niles, Illinois is a town in DuPage County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,827 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Niles Prairie on the banks of the Chicago River. Niles was founded by George Washington and his family during the early 1800s as an agricultural center for white farmers in what is now DuPage County. The first post office in Niles was established in 1825. From 1830 to 1836, Niles served as capital of Illinois; it was moved to Springfield after that state's admission into the Union. In 1842, when Congress passedthe Kansas–Nebraska Act and split Missouri into two parts, Niles became part of Kansas Territory and lost its status as capital city. During World War II (1939-1945), many people from Niles worked on farms or factories located near Chicago munitions plants such as Westinghouse and GE Aviation plants. After 1945 most residents left Nile for suburban areas around Chicago or other large cities due to rapid growth in those cities during that time period; however a small number of people still live in Nile today. In recent years there has been much discussion about whether or not to annex more land near downtownChicago so that city services could be better delivered there instead of being centralized elsewhere within Cook County; however no vote has ever been taken on this issue and it appears unlikely that such a proposal will ever be made considering current zoning laws in Cook County which favor larger centralized government structures over smaller towns and villages.
The first permanent settler in Niles, Illinois was Fenton W. Pratt in 1819. The town was platted in 1824 by John A. Macdonald and James P. McNeely, two of the original founders of Chicago. The first store opened in 1827 and the first church was built in 1830. In 1835, a post office was established at Niles and it remained open until 1888 when it was closed due to lack of mail service.
