Niles is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 11,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1836 by George Niles and his brother Nicholas Niles. The name means "north of the river" in Italian. In 1854, they started a cotton gin and market in the town to sale goods to farmers near Chicago. In 1868, they built a sawmill that still operates today and became one of the first communities in Cook County to have electric lights. Niles, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Niles is located in the center of Cook County and is bordered by DuPage to the east, Lake Michigan to the south, and Kane County to the west. Niles was first settled by German colonists in 1795 as Diehlheim on land that now makes up most of present-day Niles Township. A post office called Diehlheim was established in 1814, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1857. In 1847, a group of Englishmen who had been living near Chicago founded Niles as a trading post on the shore of Waukegan Lake. The town name has been variously attributed to Nicholas von Neumann (1764-1841), a German immigrant; John Davenport (1803-1886), an American dealer; or George Hennepin (1807-1881), an entrepreneur from Minneapolis who bought land at what is now northbound Interstate 55 and eastbound I-294 interchange). In 1849–50, Germans also immigrated to Niles from Hamburg via Steubenville after General David Farragut's expedition destroyed Fort Dearborn on Chicago's southern border. These refugees were known as "the Illini" because they bore resemblance to Native Americans and some were clothed like them. Farragut named one street after each refugee: Heinrich Wilhelm Street (Hamburgers went there for groceries); Friedrich Wilhelm Street (Germans for mechanics); Auguste François Boulevard (French for " commerce"); Wilhelmstrasse (Prussian for " home"). Nile grew rapidly due largely to lumber exports generated by its sawmills and foundries as well as shipbuilding activity associated with its connection through river shipping routes with Europe's largest city and seaports. By 1870, over 60% of all county sales took place within five miles of downtown Niles—a growth rate unique among towns in Illinois at that time. In 1870 alone, mills processed more than $1 million worth of goods within five miles of downtown; this enabled entrepreneurs such as George Hennepin Sr.'s brother George Hennepin Jr., president James Naismith's father Amos naismith & Sons Brewing Company founders Elijah Parish Lovejoy and Samuel Morse à la Morse & Sons Railroad Co., Jno.[1] This industrialization increased prices for food staples such as meat et cetera while reducing labor costs associated with traditional agriculture methods; however not all farmers became prosperous from this new mode of production but instead experienced price deflation that limited their impact nationally during these years Since then much has changed around here...The millenium brought about advances including everything from computer technology today helping us communicate better online than ever before - even taking pictures!
