Niles, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Kane County. It lies on the southern border of Chicago, about 30 miles (48 km) south-southwest of downtown Chicago, and 40 miles (64 km) north-northwest of Peoria. The population was 66,955 at the 2010 census. Niles was founded in 1824 as a small village called Millikenville by Methodist missionaries from Kentucky under the name "New Ulm." In 1827, it became a town when its founders burned down what is now the only extant building in Millikenville - an early stage gristmill. The first post office opened in Niles on March 12, 1830. The town was renamed Niles after John A. Niles, who served as Indiana's first lieutenant governor and as secretary of state during James K. Polk's second term as president from 1844 to 1850; he also served as member of Congress from that district from 1849 to 1861. In 1863, following the American Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer's forces attacked and destroyed Fort Dearborn near Chicago while his army was marching through Illinois en route to invade Missouri; this event is known as Custer's Raid or Morecambe Raid because many cavalry troopers were lost including Custer and two officers who rode with him – Alfred Pfeiffer and John Mapes – both killed during the attack sequence which lasted for three days starting on October 15th before finally surrendering on October 17th at White Sulphur Springs outside present day Prairie du Chien Wisconsin Territory
In 1892, the town of Niles was founded in Randolph County, Illinois. The town was named for General Nathan Lyon, who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as a brigadier general during the American Civil War. The first white settlers arrived in 1892 and by 1899 there were over 150 people living in Niles. In 1925, the town had a population of 3200 and by 1947 it had grown to over 11000 people. The economy of Niles is based on agriculture and manufacturing. Agriculture includes crops such as corn, beans, soybeans, wheat, potatoes, cottonseed oil, hay, oats and other vegetables; livestock including cows, pigs, horses and chickens; and manufactured goods such as pianos and radios. Manufacturing includes businesses that produce farm machinery (such as tractors), vehicles (including pickups), construction materials (such as bricks) and appliances (such as ovens). Niles is home to many cultural attractions including the Michigan National Historic Site (founded in 1837), Pioneer Park (a Victorian-era park with an exposition hall/garden) and the Illinois Masonic Museum & Library.
