George Stephenson built his first railroad here in 1838 which connected Detroit with Chicago via this route. This made Niles an important city throughout its early years and it retains this status today. Niles also played a significant role within the American Civil War. It was here where General Ulysses S Grant located his army for the Battle of Vicksburg on July 4th 1863 which helped lead to Abraham Lincoln’s victory over Confederate General Robert Ewell Jr.. Today, Niles continues to be an important center for industry with a number of companies headquartered here including GEICO (formerly Nationwide), Chrysler and Ford Motor Company. Additionally, many colleges and universities are based in or have campuses located in Niles including Northern Illinois University (NIU), DuPage County Community College (DCCC), Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Northwestern Memorial Hospital among others

Niles is a village in Niles Township, Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 3,836 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Niles Township. The village was laid out in 1868 by George Stephenson and named for him. In 1870, it was organized as a dry goods store town. A post office was established in 1875, and the name was changed to Niles in 1898. The first school opened in 1876 and served grades one through twelve. The name change to its current form came about because of an attempt by the Village Board to improve upon "Nile" which had been chosen by residents as an unintended reference to navigation on the river that flows through town. In 1962, DuPage County created Kane County from portions of Niles and Skokie counties; however, no change occurred to the original boundaries of either village until 1984 when part of Skokie county became Cook County and part of Niles became Kane County again. The town of Niles was founded in 1824 by Nicholas L. Niles and his wife Lydia. The first land sale took place on November 1, 1824, with the lot being purchased for $60. Niles had been born in 1792 and died in 1850. His parents were John Niles and Elizabeth (Betsy) Ladd. The town became a village in 1836, and a city in 1865.
