By 1907, machine guns had become commonplace on battlefields around the world. For this reason, manufacturers began developing firearms with military-style features such as grenade launchers (1914), air-burst munitions (1939), and even recoilless rifles (1948). However, until recently there was no standard method for attaching gun sights onto these weapons - each manufacturer devised its own system based on personal preference or unique conditions specific to their product line.
