In 1886, Niles, Illinois was founded by a group of farmers who decided to name their town after the Greek god Apollo. Niles is a small city in the Illinois River Valley, located about 25 miles (40 km) south of Chicago and about 15 miles (24 km) east of St. Louis. The population was 20,451 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bloomington–Normal metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what is now Niles dates back to 1818 when French traders William Champion and Étienne de Bourgneuf landed on the site from the ship "La Peine d'Aquitaine". Bourgneuf named his new settlement after General Jean-Baptiste Nappière, commander of an expedition against Native Americans near modern day St. Louis. In 1821, Captain John Fitzgerald founded a trading post at Niles which became known as Niles Station. In 1833, President Andrew Johnson ordered Major General Adam Clayton Powell to build a road through central Illinois in order to connect Chicago with Vandalia on the Mississippi River. Powell's plan called for a canal to be dug through what is now Niles and across the river intoSt Louis County; however, this project never materialized due to financial limitations. During World War II, many industries were established in Niles including aircraft manufacturing and shipbuilding; however, these facilities closed during or after World War II due to technological advances and other industrial changes that occurred outside of North America at that time. Consequently, today only two buildings from those days remain: one dating from 1915 and used as the town hall until it burned down in 2007; and another former steel plant dating from 1941 which still stands as an abandoned building but has been renovated into apartments by local entrepreneurs since its closure over 20 years ago).
