Niles is a city in Niles Township, Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was estimated to be 24,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Niles Township and was founded in 1836. In 1837, Niles was chartered as a village by John Ferguson. In 1840, it became a town. On February 17, 1860 – over five years after being organized as a township – Niles became the first municipality in Cook County when it annexed the neighboring village of Arlington Heights. On November 15, 1907, Mayor John Prentice's motion for an election to be held on December 3 resulted in the incorporation of Chicago-based Phelps Dodge Company into Niles as an American company with its headquarters located there (the first time that such a corporate headquarters had been set up in America). The company continued to use its original building until it moved to its current location on State Street near downtown Chicago in 2003. The largest employer within city limits at any given point during its history has been Phelps Dodge Company with over 60% of all employment and more than 10% of all income within city limits during most periods since 1907; other major employers have included First National Bank (10%), Menard’s department store (9%), Wabash Railroad Co., Inc., and Northern Illinois University (8%).
Niles, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Kane County. The population was 209,851 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies on the Chicago River and is bordered by Lake Michigan to its south and east, Kane County to its northwest and west, and DuPage County to its north. The first European settlers in what is now Niles were French traders who arrived in 1765–67 as part of an attempt to open up new territory in central Illinois. They established a trading post on the site of present-day Niles before moving on to other areas in that year. A group of British soldiers under General George Rogers Clark discovered Niles during his 1812 invasion of Northwest Indiana Territory, led by Chief Joseph Kaskaskia, when they burned down a Native American village near modern-day Peoria Heights. In 1837, John Marshall founded Marshall College (now Northwestern University) in what is now Niles with land he had bought from Kaskaskia's heirs after Clark's invasion; most of today's Marshalls live there today. In 1871, Park Ridge was incorporated as a town within Kane County; it became Niles' municipal center when all other municipalities within Kane County were amalgamated into one in 1922. In 1942, during World War II,[1] Niles became an important military base for training troops for Operation Overlord; it remained an active military installation until 2005[2]. In 1959,[3] Mayor Richard Jagger announced that he would not seek re-election because he felt his work as mayor had helped make Niles "the most vibrant city ever".[4] He was replaced by Neil Armstrong Jr., then America's first human being to walk on Earth.[5][6][7] After Armstrong's death in 2012,[8] Mayor Robert King took over as mayor.[9][10][11] As of the 2016 census[12], the population was estimated at 230,623.[13][14]:2:1 The City Council has two members with no term limits.<15>:1 There are three wards each elected at large which means that every two years every Ward Councillor will have their turn coming up against someone else new so everyone knows who they're voting for!

Niles was a small town in the Northwest Territory of Illinois until 1830, when it became part of the new United States. The town was named for General Niles and his brother-in-law, Christopher Edwards. In 1847, when Niles seceded from Illinois to join Missouri, its citizens voted to rename their town again – this time Niles in honor of General Andrew Johnson. The first store in Niles was built on State Street by John A. Grogan and opened in 1838. David Leland's grocery store followed on State and First Streets in 1840. The first schoolhouse was built on Fourth Street in 1841 by the town trustees. In 1850, Isaac Shields started a flour mill at what is now North Main Street and First Avenue; he also operated a sawmill and gristmill on First Avenue near the present site of the library (now called Hennepin County Library). In 1861, Jno Bowerman started brewing beer at his house on Third Street west of Center Road. By 1865, there were six beer breweries operating in Niles: three from Shields, two from Bowerman, one from John Gorman (the father of Minneapolis founder John Gorman), one from Isaac Asimov (founder of Asimov’s Patents Inc.), and one each from Edward Teller (founder of Ettelbaum Laboratories) and August Kesselring (founder of Continental Paper Products). Nile's post office first opened on Pioneer Place east ofcenter road in 1868; it later moved to its current location at 5th Avenue South west of Center Road. In 1870–71, Elijah Imboden started an ice cream factory at what is now East Seventh Street south of center road; it continued operation until 1916. John Wetherbee founded Winthrop University west side farm near present day Central Ave., north side farm between Second & Third avenues eastofFirst avenueandnorth side farm between Third & Fourth avenues northeastofFirst avenuein1875; university began operations as Wesleyan University four years later with 136 students studying theology/ divinity/ policy studies/ engineering/ law etc.; university building still stands today as Northwestern University Hall housing many Northwestern Northwestern colleges including law schools such as DePaul Law School (& Diverse Colleges), UIUC Carbondale & UIUC Bloomington among others!
