New Lenox, Illinois is a town located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 27,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago–Naperville–Kenilworth Metropolitan Statistical Area. New Lenox is known for its beautiful woodsyvillage setting and its landmark building such as The Lenox House and The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. The Town of New Lenox was organized on February 22, 1838, when twelve hundred acres of land east of Chicago became available for purchase from the estate of Benjamin Butler. The town took its name from highway 12 which ran through the area then called Winnetka Heights. At first, only men were allowed to live in the new community and they were forced to build their own homes using logs that they collected from around the area. In 1846, New Lenox voted to secede from Cook County and become an independent municipality with its own government and courts. In 1860, the town approved a resolution asking President Abraham Lincoln to Visit them during his inaugural parade in order to observe their "splendidly knit community." New Lenox is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 33,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is located northeast of Chicago on the Dan Ryan Expressway. New Lenox was platted in 1847 by General John P. Morgan as part of his plan to create a new township in what was thenouterwest region of Illinois. The present-day town began to form as businesses grew around transportation opportunities created by the Illinois Central Railroad's (ICR) building of a branch line from downtown Chicago to its eastern terminus in Lawndale. Streets were named after railroad personnel or other early settlers who had contributed to their development: North Main Street, East Main Street, West Main Street, etc., until they became locally known simply as "the streets." In 1881, local farmers started raising corn on their own land east of town on Otter Creek Road; this stimulated further development and growth around the nexus of ICR tracks and farmlands just south of modern-day New Lenox village boundaries. In 1886, Mayor Augustus Burt granted cityhood to what would become New Lenox Village; however this did not mark an end to village governance because it continued under state government control until 1888 when it reverted back into that of Cook County when Illinois became a state independent from US federal jurisdiction. During World War II (1942–1945), many people from nearby towns worked for ICR's Springfield main office; some remained there through 1945 when the company closed its business in that city. The name "New Lenox" originated with one such individual - General John P. Morgan - who decided that his new township should be called "Lenox," after himself and his home county near Boston MA (now Quincy). Today's economy is based largely on physical production which includes manufacturing and services related thereto but also enjoys highly diversified regional trade within Greater Chicagoland Area including services provided by companies based in Schaumburg/Arlington Heights IL suburbs north thereof including Brownstown Township NJ across Lake Michigan within reach via I-88 corridor linking those two communities and numerous providers within several hundred miles radius directly or indirectly supported by employees working at those facilities plus additional service sectors located within commuting distance including restaurant workforces providing close proximity dining experiences while shopping malls provides more general destination activities
Lenox was first settled by English colonists in 1795. It grew rapidly as a result of its location on the Mississippi River, and became a major slave-holding center in the antebellum period. In 1833, Lenox became part of the United States following the American Civil War. The town experienced significant growth during the 1920s and 1930s due to its role as an important manufacturing center for munitions and other goods needed for World War II. After the war, Lenox experienced modest growth until suburbanization began to occur in the early 21st century.
