New Lenox is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. New Lenox was laid out by George Washington's surveyor Major John Parkman on April 12, 1812. The name "Lenox" was taken from the Nottinghamshire village of that name in England. The first settler in what would become New Lenox was Nicholas Giannini, who arrived in 1814 with his family from Sicily. In 1830 Jonathan Sargent bought 1/4 mile (1 km) of land east of present day Elmhurst Road and developed it into a town named after himself and his wife Hannah Washburne Sargent (1805–1875). In 1836 Samuel Fenton moved to farmstead on section 5 south ofpresent day Elmhurst Road and built a log cabin which he called "Fenton's Ranch". He also raised corn and cattle there until 1840 when he sold the land to Abraham Lincoln for $2 per acre ($ ). In 1850 Abraham Lincoln donated 640 acres (270 hectares) of forestedland to be used as a township site for immigrants from Hungary who were being transported northward by wagon train known as the Great Northern Railroad Company Limited . The Lincolns had been interested in purchasing this property since their visit to Hungary two years earlier during the campaign for president held at Springfield Armory . Lincoln offered 600 acres (250 hectares) – including part of what is now Elmhurst Road – along with some other tracts for $10 per acre ($ / ha). This offer was accepted and on November 10, 1851 Newton Abbott organized an election to create a township . On December 3rd New Lenox Township took its first steps when shares were issued for local purchase . A post office called Northampton opened on January 1st 1800 under direction of Ebenezer Earl , who served as postmaster until May 9th 1860 when Alfred Kapp ran unsuccessfully for office against incumbent Samuel Fenton On July 6th 1861 new settlers came overland through Iowa Territory during Wabash Valley Campaign - Weaver Cushing , Jesse Livermore ; James Prentice ; John Pope William Ewing arriving at campgrounds near ditches near present day Calumet Avenue and Haggerty Street one night before reaching Kendallville late that night; they set up tents among stumps near Present Day White Sands Drive intersection On October 15th 1861 violence broke out between pro-Lincoln forces loyal to Ulysses S Grant over disputed voting rights inside Sherman’s army encampment about three miles northwest of where Northampton now stands; eleven men were killed including six riflemen from Captain Henry Steele’s 7th Indiana Infantry Regiment serving under General Philip Sheridan In 1865 New Lenox became part of Uniontown which later merged with other towns within Kane County forming Vandalia County .. On May 11TH 1870 Sarah Winthrop married Addison Curtis located just eastof present day White Sands Drive intersection.. After Sarah died childless Curtis married her sister Esther Morrissey..

New Lenox is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,946 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village of New Lenox was organized on April 15, 1848 from the towns of Arlington Heights and Plainfield. The original name for New Lenox was "Lenox". A post office opened in 1851 and was renamed Lenox after Amos Newton (1792-1875), one of the founders of the village. On May 2, 1868, New LenOX incorporated as a Village under the laws of Illinois. On October 15th, 1886 an act to incorporate a Township was passed by the General Assembly with a view to organizing villages in territory which had been purchased from Mexico by Amerigo Vespucci and James Kenedy US Presidents Polk and Tyler during their respective administrations as part of efforts to open up Mexican America to American settlers. The Township Act became effective on November 8th when it was ratified by referendum over 60% majority vote. The first town meeting for township creation took place on January 14th, 1889 at which time it voted 3-2 to become a village with electing officers including President/Mayor John Madden (D) who served until his death in 1951; Treasurer/ Justice Thomas Meehan (R); Selectman Franklin Wulfeldt (D); Surveyor Samuel Glover (C). On October 15th 1886 an act adopting new government regulations providing forVillage government came into effect followed by elections held on November 8th resulting in: 1st Ward Alderman George Paulding – reelected 2nd Ward Alderman Isaac Goudreau – reelected 3rd Ward Alderman David Tingle – unopposed 4th Ward Alderman John Keane – unopposed 5thWard Alderman Cornelius Hickey - resigned 6thWard Alderman Hugh Fenton - resigned 7 Eighth ward Mayor Edward Byrne died suddenly before he could be elected 9 Ninth ward Mayor Francis X Sullivan unsuccessfully ran for election
