New Lenox, Illinois is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. New Lenox is home to Washington National Cathedral and The John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum. The first permanent settler in what would become New Lenox was George Ketchum in 1814. Ketchum purchased 2 acres (0.8 km2) of land from Ebenezer Morse on December 12, 1814. He named his new village after John Fitch, an American Fur trader who had settled near Ketchum's original cabin site in 1809-10. In 1825, Nicholas Scudder bought 8 acres (3 ha) of land northwest of the village from Ebenezer Morse for $100 cash and built a cabin thereon which he called "Scudder's Grove". In 1830-31, Nicholas Scudder sold his interest in "Scudder's Grove" to Elisha Peabody for $125 cash; Peabody renamed it "New Lenox". The first post office at New Lenox was established on November 15, 1840 by order of President James Kavanagh with Pemberton as its first mail carrier; Pemberton came from nearby Lemont and acted as assistant postmaster until October 21st when he resigned because of illness at age 36 years old. On March 6th 1861 (+/- 3 days), Abraham Lincoln delivered his inaugural address from First Congregational Church located on State Street northeast of the Village - this sermon also marks the first time that New Lenox was mentioned as being within Chicago limits on any official document! Elisha Peabody donated some land east of present day Lake Shore Drive to form what would become Park Avenue between Elmhurst Avenue and Cicero Avenue in 1851; this park became one of Chicago's most popular attractions due to its lawns full of well-known trees such as THE GORDON BOGART TREE (1912), THE WHITE HOUSE BEACHES STATE PARK (1938), AND A SPRINGFIELD TREE NAMED FOR HARRY S Truman (1945). A state fairgrounds/park opened on January 7th 1907 along present day Michigan Ave just southwest corner Lake Shore Drive & Randolph Road - it closed following World War II but reopened briefly in 1951 before closing again for good entirely due to environmental concerns! Lenox was a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It is now a part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Lenox was founded in 1839 by General John Brown and his brother Major Isaac Brown. The first post office opened in 1841. The community grew rapidly due to its location between the two great railroads, the Northwestern and Chicago Western Railroads; Lenox became an important stop on both lines. The population of Lenox peaked at over 12,000 in 1860 but declined rapidly due to factors such as disease and industrialization. However, with the arrival of the railroad system in 1870,Lenox regained some popularity among travelers and saw a resurgence in its economy until World War I caused a virtual collapse of the local manufacturing sector which led to social unrest and economic decline. In 1925, however, developer Edward Laughlin purchased large tracts of land adjacent to Lake Michigan for what would become Lenox Park (now known as Lincoln Park). This new development attracted numerous high-end residents who began restoring much of what had been lost during Lenox's rapid decline since World War I: old homes were replaced with more recent architecture; parks were created; and businesses reopened including several banks which thrived until they were closed by prohibitionists following the repeal of Prohibition in 1920. Today nearly all traces of early 20th century industry have been eliminated from Lenox except for a small collection of historical artifacts at one particular site
