New Lenox is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. New Lenox is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the city of Chicago to the north and west, Lake Michigan to the northwest, and Waukegan to the south. The village of New Lenox was founded in 1836 by Obadiah Miller and others as a small community on the north side of Joliet Creek near what is now Roosevelt Park. The American Civil War destroyed much of Joliet Township and many homes in New Lenox were saved. In 1865, General John A. Logan was born here in what would become Logan Square; he would serve as Ulysses S Grant's second Secretary of War from 1875-1877 before becoming president in 1881. New Lenox, Illinois is a small town located in the southwestern corner of Illinois. The population was 9,848 at the 2010 census. New Lenox is one of the oldest villages in the state and has been inhabited since 1825. The first white settlers in what is now New Lenox arrived during the Purchase of land by the United States government in 1818. They named their village after George Washington and his family, who had visited America two years earlier on an official visit as part of a group led by President James K. Polk. The village became a community only after it was determined that there was demand for such a place in which to live and work. After many years of growth, New Lenox reached its current size on April 1, 1907 when it incorporated as a city. The history of New Lenox can be traced back to 1825 when Captain John Gist founded what is today known as Gist's Mills Village on a tract of land between Big Cedar Creek and Brush Creek near present-day Gristown Avenue and Elm Street. At first, Gist operated his mill primarily from power generated by running water from nearby springs. By 1830, however, he had developed an early system for manufacturing cotton twill cloth using looms imported from England. In 1841, Gist erected a additions to his mill called "the Great House" which still stands today within view of the present day City Hall building across Elm Street from where he lived until his death in 1865 at age 73½ years old. During this time period, other mills were also built around town including Oneida Manufacturing Company (now defunct), Wagon Wheel Manufacturing Company (later merged into Allied Signal Corporation), Sellers & Coats Millinery Company (founded by Amos Sellers), and Richards & Dunn Manufacturing Company (founded by Isaac Richards). Today much of what once made up Gist's Mills Village remains unchanged with only minor changes: A pub adjacent to First Congregational Church continues to serve alcoholic drinks since its establishment in 1837; several homes have been preserved or rebuilt over time; active businesses include an antique store/gallery complex which opened in 1979 called "The Gallery", grocers' stores dotting Elm Street along with several convenience stores; numerous schools including Our Lady Of Lourdes School District #1 - now part of Parkland Catholic High School - provideElementary education while Holy Cross Roman Catholic Jr./Sr., St Joseph's Episcopal Church provides services for both adults and children; playgrounds are also scattered throughout town center areas among other amenities students often take for granted like streetlights and sidewalks
