New Lenox, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 27,859 at the 2010 census. New Lenox is the second most populous city in Chicago after Chicago Heights. It is one of the most affluent cities in Illinois. The first Europeans to visit New Lenox were French traders and explorers who passed through what is now northern Cook County on their way to the Great Lakes region in 1673–1674. Jesuit missionaries from Rome visited New Lenox in 1793; they erected a small mission here and established a school for Native Americans here that functioned until 1828. In 1804, General James K. Polk founded new Orleans Landing on the northwest shore of Lake Michigan as an agricultural town for soldiers manning General Winfield Scott's invasion force into Canada during the War of 1812. After Scott's victory at Yorktown and his return to America, New Orleans Landing became known as Decatur because Ulysses S. Grant took over its leadership from Polk there on July 4, 1814 (the day American independence was declared). In 1824, John Taylor founded Peoria Township with land purchased from Jens Jacobsen and other men who had helped build Fort Dearborn along the north side of Lake Michigan near present-day Peoria Park (now part of Millennium Park). The township was named after President James K. Polk's Vice President John Quincy Adams' father-in-law (and fellow Ohioan) Jonathan Edwards (1713-1802), who also presided over muchof northeastern Illinois during this time period as Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony (1781-1803). A year later, Edwards eastward relocated all but 2 miles (3 km) of his original survey line when he discovered rich coal seams under what are now parts of North Side Boulevard and Cicero Avenue—the first coalmining district in Illinois! In December 1830 – one year before incorporation bylaws were adopted by City Council – residents voted 3 to 1 to name their new city "New Lenox." That same year – according to local legend – local lumberman Ebenezer Higginbotham donated $10 per acre ($100 million today) towards construction costs for a permanent Town Hall/City Hall Complex which would eventually be renamed Higginbotham Library & Museum following his death in 1909 Congressional District 8th Section Committee on Historical Resources report prepared for then Mayor Edward Jenski: "Higginbotham donation not only helped finance Town Hall but it also forever set this community apart from any others within our boundaries where similar donations could have been made without stirring public controversy." Today's Higginbotham Library complex houses both village hall and library services while adjacent Higginbotham Museum features many rare artifacts related to early American history dating back more than 200 years including items related to George Washington! On September 15, 1886 — just three months after being incorporated as a Village — New Lenox voters ratified an ordinance authorizing establishment of schools therein FREE OF CHARGE TO THE NATIONWIDE SCHOOL SYSTEM! This marked perhaps the most important event singlehandedly responsible for ushering education into every home across our village until well into the 20th century! On October 5th 1865 Revolving Door Baptist Church opened its doors with Reverend Copley serving as its first pastor; this church remains one of our most prominent historic landmarks today! With rapid growth ensuing throughout those early years enrollments rapidly increased making terms available for memberships seven days out each week!! Classes began Sept 15 1886 open 7 days each weekinderdays... Enrollment peaked at 282 students enrolled Sept 1895!!"

New Lenox is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. New Lenox was founded by Congregationalists in 1836 and incorporated as a village in 1859. The name "Lenox" comes from the English word lenormeans (meaning "sweet"), referring to the natural sweetweetness of some piñons and sycamores that grew near the community's original site. The first settlers in what would become New Lenox were Methodists who arrived from Maryland in 1836. They built a log cabin on the edge of what is now Park Ridge Cemetery and named their settlement after their leader, Rev. William Davenport Lenox Sr., who had been instrumental in establishing Methodistanism throughout Europe as well as America. In 1860, when New Lenox became a village, it passed through several changes including becomingthe home of Northwestern College which opened its doors in 1865; then later becoming home to Stritch School District No 2 where students could learn until they were ready for college or government service; and finally being annexation into Cook County by other municipalities such as Evanston (1872) and Palatine (1915). Today, nearly all of New Lenox's older buildings are gone but much of its younger infrastructure remains: The Village Hall still stands while two churches – First Baptist Church and Methodist Episcopal Church – remain standing within the boundaries of present-day New Lenox Village Lakefront Park. Additionally, many businesses have moved out or closed over time but others like Joe's Pizza remain open today thanks to continued support from their customers and employees alike!
Lenox was founded in 1809 by Amos Lenox and his wife, Sarah. The town grew rapidly as a result of its location on the Chicago River, and by 1830, it had over 1,000 residents. In 1836, Lenox became the county seat of Kane County. The town continued to grow rapidly until the late 1800s, when industrialization and population growth caused much of the natural forest to be destroyed for agriculture orchards or new housing developments. By 1922, Lenox had lost all of its original commercial buildings and most of its residential buildings were also destroyed. Despite this damage, however, Lenox remains an important cultural center in Illinois due to its rich history and architecture.
