New Lenox, Illinois is a small town located in the far northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,823 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Illinois. The first inhabitants of New Lenox were the Potawatomi Indians. The first white person to reside in what is now New Lenox was Major John Smith who built a cabin on the site in 1795. In 1803, General James K. Polk surveyed and founded Nauvoo Landing on the Fox River near present day Midway Airport in order to provide goods for Native American settlers east of the Mississippi River. His survey also included land that would later be part of New Lenox Township. In 1815, Nicholas Lowenthal bought some land from Joseph Muhlenberg and erected a gristmill on what is now State Road 154 north of present-day Middleton Road. Lowenthal's mill became one of early industry in New Lenox with power being supplied by horse-drawn buggies until it was replaced by an electric plant in 1922 when New Lenox Electric Light Company began operations with three generators and two hundred horsepower (100 kW). There were also five sawmills operating within town limits during this time: Lowenthal & Sons (1827), Howe Bros./Lowenthal Bros.(1829), Greenback Saw Mill(1830), Stevens Saw Mill(1835) and Griggs & Burnett Saw Mill (1836). In 1840, Town Clerk Nathaniel Green removed all nails from town buildings except for those used for building construction so that they could be provided by hand without fear of vandalism or theft; this service continued until 1963 when nails were put back into buildings after being removed byandals because they could no longer beTrustee NathanGreen . By 1870 there had been twenty businesses operating within town limits with sixty residents; however, by 1900 only ten businesses remained along with only fifty residents - most living inside municipal boundaries which trended towards suburban growth over downtown development throughout much OF IL during this period as well as subsequent decades . In 1924 Mayor Al Capone appointed Alfred Fenton as his assistant city attorney; Fenton worked under Capone until 1928 when he took office as City Marshal replacing John Buckley who resigned owing to health problems caused by alcohol abuse.. After serving four terms as City Marshal (1928-34) he returned to private practice until his retirement in 1961 which ended abruptly when Capone was indicted on federal corruption charges ..... From 1942 until his death Mayor Richard Jakiowski led efforts unsuccessfullyto reelect him mayoralty insteadof relying entirely upon patronage ..... Daniel Patrick Moynihan characterized New Lenox as "a place too busy for politics" observe ing , "It wouldn't make much sense whatsoever if you tried running anything here because everyone would just move away". ....The commercial center has since changed hands multiple times but has not displaced traditional manufacturing or retail functions that continue today."
