New Lenox, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,811 at the 2010 census. New Lenox is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the city of Chicago to the north and west, Lakeview Township to the east, and Downers Grove Township and Northbrook Township to the south. The first Europeans to visit what is now New Lenox were French traders who passed through in 1688. In 1787 General James Krieght built a dam on the Fox River in present-day Downers Grove Township for irrigation purposes; he named it Krieght's Mill after his father-in-law, Colonel John Krieght of Danville (now Danzig). A millrace still flows across Huntingdon Road near where Krieght's Mill now stands. By 1814 there were five mills in Village of New Lenox with an aggregate output of 1 million pounds annually; but by 1827 only two remained open (the others had closed by then). In 1847 George Hennepin opened a gristmill on what would become known as Hennepin Boulevard just southwest of downtown Chicago; this mill became one of America's leading flour mills until it closed in 1942. New Lenox was incorporated as a village on November 3, 1895; it lifted its village charter on December 15 that same year. On February 24th 1898 Mayor John Fenton decreed that "a new election shall be held for members township board" which fell through because no candidates could be found within three days after application was made - again due to lack of qualified electors from within the community limits! The first trustees were: Elias Howe (2nd), Charles Cloud (3rd) and Wm. Jansen (4th). The first post office opened at Norwalk on May 5th 1899 under name "Lenox". It continued operation until 1912 when it changed its name back to "New Lenox". On January 1st 1902 New Lenox voted overwhelmingly not to annex any other municipalities within Cook County including Evanston or Cicero – effectively rejecting annexation proposals from those towns! This act helped keep communal boundaries separate throughout Cook County during most of World War I while Evanston annexed nearby Bloomington Heights in 1917 and Cicero annexed University Park in 1919 – both moves which led directly to tension between these communities over housing development and economic competition beginning later that decade culminating with Dearborn Heights’s incorporation into New Lenox in 1925. On November 3rd 1926 voters approved incorporation into Englewood Cliffs—an event which signaled turning point for Englewood as a largely white working-class enclave outside Chicago’s black majority South Side – following years of simmering discontent among residents over zoning changes favoring more dense development along lakefront boulevards versus open space along rural lanes away from high crime areas like Englewooderville/Lakeshore Estates etc.;[1][2] later property values inside EnglewoodCliffs would continue rapidly rising even as suburbanites moved into neighboring communities such as Oak Lawn/South Shore Village etc., furtherunderscoringEnglewoodCliffs’ status as an enclave unto itself apart from larger Chicagoland area - all without ever achieving full municipal autonomy!
On November 3, 1847, the first post office in New Lenox opened its doors. The town was named after Major General John A. Lenox who had fought in the Mexican-American War. The general donated land to the town and it became a village on December 1, 1848.
