New Lenox's history dates back to 1847 when it was founded as part of the Township of Northfield by George Washington Carver and his wife Catherine Hammond Carver. In 1857, New Lenox became a separate town and remained so until 1959 when it joined the Village of Northfield. At the same time, its boundaries were changed to encompass all of east-central Cook County. The population has since increased by over 20% due to suburban development within its borders and growth in neighboring towns such as Romeoville and Mount Prospect which have annexed much of what used to be New Lenox' residential area. New Lenox is located on Lake Michigan just north of downtown Chicago and bordered by PlainFIELD on the west side and Oak Lawn on the east side. According to the 2010 census, New Lenox has a total area of , making it one of the smallest cities in Illinois with an acreage smaller than that of only two other villages - Arlington Heights (2 acres) and Lisle (1 acre). However, planners believe this may change given new annexation possibilities for areas beyond its limits such asraised land along Dearborn Avenue adjacent to South Side Highway just south of I-94 or undeveloped land adjacent to LaSalle Street between Cicero Avenue and Roosevelt Road near Northwestern University - both areas potentially capable of hosting significant populations if developed well enough. The city's name comes from nearby Mount Lebanon Cemetery where George Washington Carver buried many family members during his lifetime including his son John Quincy Adams Carver who later served as President Ulysses S Grant's Vice President during Reconstruction in America following World War II In 1887 Charles Wickersham Hitchcock donated land comprising present day blocks 1-3 Larimer Street between Griggs Boulevard/northwest corner Weisman Avenue/southwest corner Sheridan Drive/east corner Higgins Boulevard/northwest corner Hines Boulevard/southwest corner Parkman Boulevard for use as a public school district called "Lenox School District". Construction began on September 14th 1886 with cornerstone laying ceremonies being held at which First Lady Frances Willard officiated On October 3rd 1887 school opened with grades 1-12 During first year there were only 12 students but enrollment increased every year until 1912 when schools reached 300 pupils In 1913 Maud Templeton bought farm adjoining school from Charles Wickersham Hitchcock for $1400 Mrs Templeton also donated cash for addition trees & building materials . After her death in 1916 her estate gifted additional property southeast from original campus site . On November 15th 1916 Third Principal James Fenton took office & organized new Board Of Education . He led Board until December 1933 when he resigned due to health reasons . By 1934 there were 6 principals & 27 teachers including Mrs Gertrude Pugh who had been hired after leaving Holy Cross College Teachers Union (now UE) teaching high schools in Buffalo Grove IL ..
