New Lenox is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 105,975 at the 2010 census. The first European settlers in New Lenox were Samuel Curtis and his family who arrived from Connecticut on July 4, 1814. They built a log cabin on the east side of the town near Lake Michigan. In 1836, John Pritzker purchased land outside of New Lenox but never moved into it. He left his money to his son Emanuel Pritzker which he used to purchase 310 acres (1 km2) of land that would become much of today's downtown New Lenox. In 1839, Emanuel Pritzker married Juliette de Rothschild who had also bought land in what is now downtown New Lenox; they renamed their new home "New York". The couple lived there until their death in 1925. There are several streets named for them including Emanuel Street and Juliette Boulevard. The first post office in New Lenox was established on December 10, 1840 by George Wigglesworth with the name "Lenox". The current post office building was built in 1907 as part of a larger community development project called "Municipal Buildings and Grounds" which included many modern buildings such as a library and police station located on State Street across from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine/McDonald Hospital campus. The population of New Lenox grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location within close proximity to other cities such as Chicago and Saint Louis; however, it declined after World War II because so many people became suburbanized both within Cook County and throughout Illinois due to increased job opportunities available outside urban areas during this time period. New Lenox is a town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,371 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. New Lenox was founded in 1836 by Captain Nathan Atherton and his party of settlers from England as a new settlement on the shore of Lake Michigan. The first post office opened in 1837. By 1840, it had become an agricultural community with 3 farms and 27 families residing therein. New Lenox grew rapidly during the mid-19th century due to its key role as a transportation hub for goods moving through the Great Lakes region and its status as a commercial center for grain, lumber, railroad development, and shipbuilding. The stockyards that developed along State Street near downtown were one of the largest in Illinois during this time period. In 1860, New Lenox became part of the newly created Territory of Minnesota when that territory was carved out of Missouri following their victory over Missouri in the American Civil War and their annexation by Minnesota. During this time period, many prosperous farmers established themselves in what is now northcentral Kane County thanks to contributions from railroads such as the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad (later C&NW), which built stations along State Street and donated land for development; various donation drives by local churches; and generous gifts from individuals like John Pritzker (founder of Hyatt Hotels). During World War II, New Lenox played an important role as both an Army training center located adjacent to where West Side Highway meets Interstate 90 just south of town limits and also as a coastal airbase used by American bombers during Operation Neptune's Spear against Japan. Following World War II, most businesses closed down or merged into larger rivals throughout Kane County; however, some small businesses continued to operate until around 1970s when they too were absorbed by larger companies or abandoned altogether within years thereafter. Most recently since 2000s there has been significant gentrification taking place with increasing levels OF foreign investment beyond just retail jobs brought about via real estate investment However gentrification does not mean abandonment but rather reinvestment into old buildings/landmarks/etc., which has resulted in more creativity within artistic expression among locals who once relied almost exclusively on tourism dollars
