On March 2nd, 1865, the Illinois General Assembly passed a bill appropriating $5,500 for the purpose. The club then solicited contributions from individuals in Illinois. Finally on May 12th of that year, they held their first quarterly meeting to elect officers and complete preparations for building the armory. With funds now available and construction proceeding quickly, on October 25th of 1865 the New Lenox Rifle Club erected its first gun swivel tower.

The village was founded in 1853 by George Washington Lewis and James Lenox as a small farming community on the east side of Chicago's North Side. At its peak in 1925, New Lenox had a population of 10,000 people. In 1961, it merged with neighboring Evanston to form the city of Chicago. The Village of New Lenox was chartered on November 3rd, 1853 by George Washington Lewis and James Lenox as an agricultural community on the east side of Chicago's North Side for their wealthy brothers-in-law John D'Alesandro and David Dixon (brothers-in-law to President James K. Polk). Lewis had come to Chicago from his home near Allentown in Pennsylvania after purchasing land there in 1846; he soon became one of the most influential men in town. On February 15th, 1853, Lewis met Anthony Comstock (the founder of COMSTOCK INDUSTRIES) while selling flour at an impromptu market at Dearborn Street and Jackson Avenue; they hit it off well enough that within weeks they haduckleformed an agreement under which COMSTOCK would provide financial support for NEW LENOX in exchange for exclusive rights to sell goods bearing the "Lenox name". A store opened on May 20th inside what is now Northwestern University's McCormick School Of Engineering Building--the first commercial structure erected by COMSTOCK IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO! continued growth followed: new businesses were added: agricultural products storekeeper Wm Halsey organized a cooperatives effort to produce hay for livestock; cigar store owner Elias Nourse began manufacturing cigars out of Tobacco seed he received from British merchants; clothing storeholder John Prentice started making woolen clothes from sheepskin hides... By 1861 there were three stores active--two operated by proprietors who exercised majority control over their companies through cooperative arrangements and one managed by LDLC Trust Company president John Cavanaugh as part of its general merchandise operations department. In 1862 JW Phelps & Sons shipping company arrived with 2 ships loaded with dry goods including lumber and hardware needed for construction workers building the new City Hall Annex during that time period In 1865 when all other factors changed affecting industry causing prices increase so much that entire village abandoned efforts start up again finding success starting soap business , this led to 4 more stores being established between 1865 - 1870 which resulted into total village have 9 stores

Lenox was home to the first high school in Illinois and the first public library in the United States. The community also hosted a number of events, such as the Illinois Centennial Exposition, which took place from 1893 to 1896. In 1962, Lenox became part of Chicago and lost its status as an independent city.
