New Lenox, Illinois is located in the Midwestern United States and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1847 by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Ann Blunt, who had come from Lenox, Massachusetts. It named for George Washington's home of New Kent County, Virginia. The first settler in New Lenox was John Davenport, who arrived in 1848. He built a log cabin on the east side of what is now State Street. A few years later, he erected a more substantial cabin on the west side of the street. In 1853, Captain Israel Putnam moved to New Lenox and bought land here that he would use as his farmstead until 1860 when he sold it to Colonel Nathaniel Hawthorne. Hawthorne lived here until his death in 1881. After Hawthorne's death, his widow continued to live here with her three children until her own death in 1911; then it passed through female succession to their son Horace Fenton-Hawthorne Jr., who became its first white mayor (1927-1945). As early as 1916 there were suggestions that the town be renamed "Lenox," after local hero Major General Leonard Wood's birthplace in Massachusetts but this idea died out because most people at that time identified with their hometowns where they lived rather than with general or national figures. Finally, on July 1st 1960 voters approved a resolution asking the US Postal Service to change the name of New Lenox from "Lenox" to "New Lenox." On October 15th 1980 Mayor Horace Fenton-Hawthorne Jr., following recommendations from city officials and residents alike submitted plans for a new civic center which would house both municipal government services including police and fire departments along with classrooms, a library (the first municipally funded one within Illinois), an event hall/ theater complex as well as other public amenities typical of larger towns across America such as shopping centers and hospitals adjacent to them; all while still preserving much of its historical architecture although updated materials are available online at www2 .il .gov/nleh/.
