New Lenox, Illinois is a village located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. New Lenox is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is bordered by Westchester County to the north, Lake Michigan to the east, Indiana to the south and west, and DeKalb County to the south-west. The Village of New Lenox was organized on December 12th, 1824 from parts of Evanston Township and North Lawndale Township. In 1827 John Strother founded a school in what is now Strother Park which soon became a popular educational center for children in Cook County. A new courthouse was built in 1830 and it remains one of the most notable examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Chicago. In 1857 John Leland bought land near present day Elmwood Avenue and State Street for $1,200 which he donated to build what became known as "Leland Park". The park would include a golf course, country estate with hunting lodges and progressive villas for wealthy residents. In 1899 purchase of additional land added much forested acreage making it one of Chicago's largest open spaces today. On October 16th 1903 President Theodore Roosevelt visited New Lenox when he traveled through Cook County on his way back from visiting Solon Hill Cemetery in Wayne county Ohio where he had celebrated note-taking exercises with farmers about conservation policies proposed by then Secretary of Agriculture James Fenton Hughes during histerm as president that summertime. During his visit Roosevelt took time out from inspecting schools throughout Illinois (he had just been inaugurated)to pay tribute to Strother's school at New Lenox which still stands today as one of America's oldest high schools educating students from Prekindergarten through college level across racial lines. It has been designated an historical site by Historic Preservation League USA since 1980
In the early days of firearms, hammers were used to pound gunstocks into shape. The first hammerless guns (a type of firearm that does not use a hammer) were created in the 16th century by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his contemporaries. These guns used an iron weight which was placed on the stock near the breech and then pulled back to strike the gunstock with a hard blow. This method caused great damage to the stock and caused it to break up. To prevent this from happening, many early firearmssmiths designed hammers with different shapes and sizes so that they could be struck more easily without damaging the stock. One of these earlyhammerless firearms was invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1595. This weapon employed a small bronze spike instead of a hammer to striking the gunstock. This weapon was very successful and became known as “The Hammer Gun” because it hit like ahammer. The first true Hammerless Rifle was developed in 1796 by James Fenton while he was working for George Mason at Fairfax Hall in Virginia. This rifle employed an iron weight instead of a bronze spike to striking the gunstock and proved extremely effective against infantry targets. It is interesting to note that both HammerlessRifles and Hammerguns were eventually replaced by modern rifles during World War II when pistols became more popular among soldiers

New Lenox, Illinois was organized as a town in 1837. The first post office was established in 1839, and the first store was built in 1840. The town rapidly grew, and by 1860 it had a population of over 1,000. In 1868 the territorial government of Illinois merged with the United States federal government, and New Lenox became part of the new city of Chicago. The town economy changed dramatically during the Great Chicago Fire of 1871-1872, and many businesses were destroyed or lost their operating permits due to that fire. However, most residents recovered quickly and rebuilt their homes and businesses. After years of steady growth, New Lenox officially became a city on November 3rd, 1886. Although its history is richly varied and wide ranging, one thing that has always been constants in New Lenox are its people - individuals who have always striven for excellence both professionally and personally. Today, New Lenox continues to be anvil against adversity - from its thriving community spirit to its vibrant downtown scene which features iconic buildings like The John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum and Statehouse Place shopping mall – all while remaining affordable for everyone!
Lenox was founded in 1817 by John Lenox and his wife, Abigail. The town was named after the hill on which it was located. The first settler in Lenox, Rev. Noah Webster, died in 1819 because of a fever contracted while out hunting. Lenox's first school opened in 1824 and its first superintendent was Dr. Augustus H. Choate. In 1830, the town had a population of about 200 people; however, it declined over the next few years because of low crop production and an Increase in population to the point where Lenox had only 10 residents by 1840. In 1852, Rev. Amos Kendall purchased 4 lots in Lenox from Drs Choate and Kendall for $2 per acre; these Lots became known as Kendall Square. In 1860, Mr. George Washington Cable became the first white person to live in Lenox when he moved into one of Kendall Square's houses with his family at that time.. In 1865-1866 Colonel Samuel Morse built a house on what is now Main Street near Green Pond (now part of Lincoln Park). This house served as both headquarters for transmitting Morse Code messages across America during World War II and also as a museum which contains exhibits on American history from colonial times to WW II . In 1934-1935 architect James Ayscough designed two new buildings – one called “The Gables” and one called “The Lodge” – on what are now State Street near Green Pond for the use of the locals hospitals before they were moved to Elmhurst Hospital south of Chicago . These buildings still stand today: “The Gables” is now home to Northwestern Illinois University/Lincoln Park Campus; “The Lodge” is now home to Gabrieli College/Lincoln Park Campus
