New Lenox is bordered by the Village of Arlington to the north, Wheaton to the east, Westmont to the south and Will County to the west. New Lenox was founded in 1836 as a small village on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan by Captain John Prentice and his wife Rachel Lincoln Prentice. A gristmill was built on what is now Chicago Boulevard in 1847 and soon became an important center for grain trade and growth for this developing community which achieved its current size by 1860 when it had ten stores, three schools (one high school), one newspaper office, two churches (Anglican and Methodist), twelve residences (eight single family homes; six three-story brick Townhomes with attached garages) and 20 businesses including 11 mills: five gristseries; four breweries; two distilleries; one printing press; one sailboat builder; two wagonmakers; two blacksmiths/armorers; one carpenter/cabinetmaker; three librarians (one female); six harnessers/furniture makers New Lenox's Commercial District spanned from Wacker Drive eastward to State Street downtown In 1880 there were thirty-six residents living in New Lenox proper while ninety-seven percent of its business district lay within twenty miles of its borders according to census takers . By 1920 only thirteen businesses remained within town limits while eighty percent of all residential buildings had been destroyed or removed making it difficult if not impossible for most citizens even today to visit their former homes The last mill closed down in 1965 followed by many other shops including those remaining at 45th & Oak Lawn avenue before being razed during 1992 renovation work which caused much damage In 1976 Town Clerk Josephine Bowers announced plans to demolish most if not all buildings dating back over 100 years following city consolidation becoming reality however some structures such as Lovejoy’s grocery still stand today
