New Lenox, Illinois ( pronounced [nɛw ˈliksɔ]), is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 46,827 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. New Lenox was founded in 1839 by General James Wilkinson as part of the new town of Peoria and named for George Washington's ancestral home in Alexandria, Virginia. The first post office in New Lenox was established on November 3, 1839. The name "New Lenox" was chosen because it had been recommended to General Wilkinson by John Brown of Harper's Ferry who said that if someone wanted to be sure they would get plenty of compliments when they were out dressed like gentlemen, they should choose a name that sounded like an aristocrat's title rather than a common word such as "Lenox". The original village had six houses and three stores; however, within two years there were ten houses and fifteen stores with a population of seventy-six people. In 1840 the village had one school and four churches; however, within five years there were thirteen schools with a population of over one hundred fifty people. In 1865 the Village requested that its land along Lake Michigan be annexed into their city limits so that the city could annex more businesses; this request was refused by Cook County officials who felt that Chicago should have first priority for annexation requests because it was then serving as both the state capital and as the largest city in America. Nevertheless, by 1870 New Lenox had become an official separate municipality with its own mayor and council members appointed by Mayor Samuel Morse while City Hall remained located on Dearborn Street across from Park Avenue House until 1911 when it moved to its current location on Elmwood Avenue near crosses owned by Bishop Carrollton Roman Catholics which still remain today as part of Holy Cross Catholic Parish (www.bishopscarrolltonchurchillschoolsnewlenox.org). In 1935 Mayor Emanuel issued an ordinance creating zoning regulations which outline what types of businesses could operate within New Lenox limits before being approved by City Council; these regulations remain in place to this day and are used to decide how much business space can be allotted for residential development or commercial uses inside City Limits without having to go through Board of Appeals review (). In 1892 when Chicago annexed Cook County, New Lenox became part of Chicago proper; however, it retained its independent governance until 1959 when it merged with neighboring Laramie to form Laramie Township
