New Lenox is located on the east side of Chicago and is bordered by Park Ridge to the north, Streamwood to the west, Oak Forest to the south and Westchester to the east. The village of Evanston is just across Lake Michigan from New Lenox. New Lenox was platted in 1836 as a rural community on what was then farmland along Cook County's eastern border with Indiana. It became an engineering center for Chicago after its founding in 1847; during this time many of Chicago's first skyscrapers were built here including First National Bank (1893), Northwestern University (1912), and Northwestern Memorial Hospital (1942). In 1972–1974, New Lenox was studied for inclusion in Emanuel Ring's "City Planner" project which aimed to create comprehensive plans for communities throughout Cook County which would provide guidance on development patterns, infrastructure needs and zoning changes that would be necessary for increasing density within certain areas. Ultimately, due to its size and lack of land available for development, New Lenox did not participate in Ring's project but instead developed its own plan which has been praised by planners as being much more Comprehensive than any other municipality in Cook County. Today New Lenox remains a largely conservative town with strong values rooted in agriculture and agriculture-related industries such as meatpacking and farming; however it has seen some recent growth in services such as retailing and real estate. There are also several schools within walking distance of each other: Newton School District No 2 has a elementary school serving grades K-6th while Lawrence Local School District No 1 offers middle/high school classes starting before 7th grade. The history of New Lenox began with John N. Lenox who arrived in Illinois in 1847 as a surveyor on an exploration mission under the leadership of President James K.� Douglas. John was born in 1784 near Dunfermline Parish, Scotland and emigrated to America at the age of eighteen months with his family on board the brigantine called Brigadier General Jackson which sailed from Glasgow on February 25th,.1817 bound for what would become California. He became land owner and settler in what is now northern Illinois before moving to central Illinois where he started up a farmstead known as "Lenox". John's grandson Nathaniel (né Brown) also came to America during this time period and joined his grandfathers farming venture at "Lenox". Over time many other members of the Brown family immigrated to America including three brothers - Isaac (born 1800), Salmon (born 1802) and David (born 1804). It should be noted that these were only their first arrivals; many others like them had preceded them during the 1830s when millions colonists migrated westward across North American soil looking for new opportunities. John N� Lenox's work as surveyor played an important role in helping lay out boundaries for future communities such as Homer Glen Estates near Chicago while later he served as treasurer for Cook County which included westernmost Lake Michigan Territory at that time Additionally he served two terms as Mayor of Evanston Township beginning in 1850 before retiring from office around 1865 At seventy-four years old John passed away leaving behind an influence that continues today through his descendants who live throughout America enjoying all aspects of their heritage including ownership or control over significant properties within our ever growing metropolitan area!
