The first school opened for students in 1838 when Isaac Fenton teacher taught one class at home before he moved to Elmhurst School District #5 which then hired him as an instructor at Highwood Academy (now Elmhurst College). In 1862, Rev. George Ruggles became the first pastor of First Congregational Church and started classes there for academy students too young to attend public schools or high school but old enough to learn about Christianity and serve on church committees. In 1865, John Aiken bought land adjacent to present day First Street/North Avenue and started building a log gristmill which soon became known as "Aiken's Mill". With increased production came increased demand for flour that made it difficult for farmers to meet their obligations under the American Civil War trade embargo put into effect because of disagreements over slavery issues between America and Great Britain . So Aiken turned his mill into a storage facility that stored foodgrain destined for Europe during World War I . At various points during its history Aiken's Mill produced up to five thousand barrels of flour per day; however due to advances in technology it stopped functioning completely until 1984 when it reopened as an agricultural museum with exhibits depicting how flour has been used throughout history

During this time there were also several homes built that are still standing today such as Fairmont Place and Elmwood Drive
