The current building was built in 1903 and replaced an earlier structure that had been destroyed by a fire years earlier. Today's downtown area was developed primarily during World War II as a military base including production plants for defense-related products such as aircraft engines and tanks. Other major industries have included information technology (including Apple Inc.'s first headquarters), chemical production (including Union Carbide Corp.), printing supplies (Joint Drug Research Laboratory), aluminum smelting (Republic Aluminum), food processing (Canton Mills frozen goods company) and agriculture (PepsiCo brewing).

He later served as United States Ambassador to Honduras from 1921-1924 and Assistant Secretary at State for Near Eastern Affairs under Woodrow Wilson during World War II before dying in 1942 at age 86 years old while serving as United States Ambassador to Latvia
Lenox is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,736 at the 2010 census. The original Lenox village was named for Samuel Lenox and his wife Deborah Pemberton. It was laid out in 1837 by Captain James Kempton and other early settlers of the area who were looking for a new home after moving from their previous farmsteads on the Chicago River. The name derives from ancient English place-names such as Ely (or Evesham), Lincolneshire (now Leicestershire, England), and Lincolnshire (now Leicestershire, England). The first store in what is now Lenox opened on December 6, 1837, by Capt. James Kempton and six other pioneers of the area including Thaddeus Stevens. In 1840 when a post office was established at Lenox Village it was renamed New Lenox because that is where General John Custer's regiment fought during the Mexican War before being sent back to Kansas under Gen. Sam Houston. In 1907 New Lenox had a population of 11 people when it annexed part of southern Hardin Township which had been lying unorganized since 1836 when Hardin Township was organized out of parts of Franklin Township due to settlement by Ulysses S. Grant's family during the general's term as president of the United States In 1916 an act to consolidate all villages within Cook County were passed with New Lenox voting against it 4 to 0 while several other towns voted in favor including Iroquois Heights which later became West Englewood On November 15th 1922 residents of neighboring Evanston transplanted over 1,000 chickens into what is now known as Columbia Park located between Harlem Churchyard Road and Continental Avenue just east of Northwestern Expressway
