As metropolitan area growth began to explode in the late 20th century, demand for space increased along with it; on December 12, 1961, DuPage County received notification fromthe Department of Transportation that it would be necessary to demolish all but one building on Naper Blvd., which then served as the nucleus for what would eventually become Loop 16TH Street—a project that led to much controversy because many buildings were preserved while others were razed (the only remaining structure from Naper Boulevard’s original incarnation is still standing). The first Europeans to visit what is now Naperville were French traders in 1673 who named it Napanee after their native village in Quebec. Polk during his brief presidency while on vacation at Carthage Plantation near Wheaton acquired 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Naperville along with two other parcels to create what would become Chicago Township (now Cook County). In 1847, John Hennepin discovered coal there and built the first mine on what is now North Avenue in today's Naperville neighborhood. By 1860, about 20 mines had been sunken into this coal field that produced over 100 million pounds (45 metric tons) of coal each year—enough to build upChicago into its present form! Most firms located here soon went out of business; however, one company that continued until 1907 was Phelps Dodge Company which mined saltpeter until 1902 when it merged with United States Smelting and Refining Company to form Peabody Coal & Iron Corporation! The construction boom that followed brought new jobs and brick buildings began popping up all over town! From grimey old warehouses filled with cinders right through downtowns stuffed with shiny new skyscrapers—it wasn't long before much naperville architecture became nationally known! As Chicago rapidly expanded during the late 1800s–early 1900s becoming one of America's largest metropolises—Naperville saw some impressive growth too: by 1900, nearly 60% of all cheese produced statewide was located within a radius including much beloved Mendota Heights cheese factory! And just like many things else associated with Chicago during those years—the high school mascot changed from 'Hawks' to 'Naps'. Naperville also experienced some heavy industry as well: by 1910 only 1/5th its current size resulted from agriculture production only 3 miles due east from downtown – making it one side effect rather than cause or result! However more significant arrivals during this time included large numbers both Irish immigrants working on farms around town as well as Poles coming for work at Wabash Copper Mines…a process that continues even today albeit via different channels!)
