In 1872–1873 construction began on what would become Chicago's first great water supply system – the Chicago River Navigation Company's navigation canal connecting Lake Michigan to Calumet Harbor in Chicago; this project would later be renamed Chicagoland Waterway System due to public pressure for improvement.) Carbon discharges into Lake Michigan were still being generated until 1902 when new methods were implemented which resulted in an initial decrease in carbon dioxide levels by over 90%. Naperville is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 83,819 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous city in Illinois after Chicago and Springfield. The Crain's Chicago Business Report ranked Naperville as "the fastest-growing city in America" in 2009 and2010. The first attempt to establish a permanent settlement in what is now Naperville was made by Captain John Henniker on October 25, 1837, when he and his men Camped near Wauconda on the south side of the Chicago River. A second group led by Major John Seddon landed at Kankakee Springs on November 10th and established Fort Dearborn which served as a depot for wagons and supplies moving between Lake Michigan and Illinois. In 1838 General James Kapp moved his command from Prairie du Chien to encampment about three miles east of present day Naperville on land grant from George Washington Coolidge. On December 5, 1838 General Kapp ordered Colonel David Dixon to move his command twelve miles northwest of present day Naperville under cover of darkness to encampment just north of Byfield Road where they would winter over until springtime when they could march back into northern Illinois. After spending Christmas with his family at their home northeast of Naperville, Colonel Dixon set out January 2nd 1839 with 1st Battalion Indiana Volunteer Infantry (now called 101st Airborne Division) commanded by Major Eugene Armstrong who had traveled downstate from Indianapolis to join them. On January 5th 1839 an armed party consisting only of Dixon's company moved two hundred yards southward along Byfield Road towards where today's Ford Avenue meets Interstate 95. Just before reaching the eastern edge of town they were attacked by approximately twenty Indians who killed all but one man including Captains Henniker and Seddon; this incident became known as "The Battle Of Byfield Road." At daylight next morning all survivors had withdrawn except Captured Indian prisoners who were placed aboard small boats anchored off shore while their captors burned their clothing so that no evidence remained behind which would identify them as American enemies or Indian antagonists during future prosecutions should any hostilities break out again between settlers and Native Americans living within easy reach of either side since there was no contemporary record or historical account documenting such activity taking place within present day Naperville limits... 1
