The first Europeans tosight what is now Naperville were French traders who passed through the area in 1693-94 while on their way from their fur trading post at Kankakee to Lake Michigan. Captain Jacques Marquette and his party were exploring lands west of the Mississippi River when they came across a small town named Prairie du Chien on November 3, 1696. They named it La Salle after Louis de Montgolfier who had brought Spanish missionaries there in 1692. In 1779, Pierre Lesage founded a fur trade post near present day corner of West Dundee Avenue and North Avenue in what is now Park Ridge on the far north side of Chicago suburb of KaneoheWaialae (later part of Honolulu). He built his post near where current day Northwestern Mutual Tower stands today as his business grew rapidly due to advances in transportation and communication technologies during this time period. By 1800 Lesage had six stores, four carriages and seventy seven employees at his post which supplied goods both domestically and abroad costing $2 per pound ($60 per kilogram) at its peak production level! As early as 1811 John Jameson had organized whaling expeditions from Ireland into Lakes Huron and Superior along what are now I-80 between Milwaukee County (now Racine) northwestward along Lake Michigan until he reached Wabash River about forty miles long northeast of Ottawa (present day Buffalo). Each load consisted either eight or ten whales but since only one whale could be taken each trip it was not very profitable for Jameson’s company since he needed more than one load to achieve profitability! After years Of experimentation whaling began again off shore around Cape Cod Bay using smaller boats called “northern lights” because they glowed white under dark sea water when seen from land; these boats became commonplace during this era also! By 1816 Hollandsche Compagnie der Nederlandsche Roeiteren had established themselves ashore at Quincy Market on Long Island Sound opposite New York Harbor having stocks totaling 603 lbs common tanned seal skins valued at $2 per pound! It wasn't until 1819 that captain Cornelius Hennepin set out from Minneapolis with three ships stocked with expectations to find Hudson's Bay Company shipwrecked crew members stranded on Banks Peninsula some 400 miles southwesterly tipof Labrador! After spending two weeks searching fruitlessly aboard ship Hennepin decided against disembarking after finding no trace whatsoever of any such group! A few months later another group led by George Vancouver discovered HMS Discovery stranding itself about 175 miles southeastwards off northwestern coastof Baffin Island!! Upon further exploration Vancouvers group found evidence that her crew may have been lost overboard when shipwrecked !! After several failed attempts including boarding Discovery himself with oarsmen just before she capsized killing all nine men onboard Vancouvers efforts eventually resulted in British American Fur Co taking over operations from Dutch American Fur Co beginning January 1st 1825!!!!! Shortly thereafter Hennepin’s successor Alexander Macdonald set out east down river toward Thunder Bay laden with 500 lbs fresh sealskins worth $4 per pound (~$1 million today) which he succeeded in selling back home after acquiring rich fur licenses covering much Northeastern Canada!!!!!!! Finally Danish American whalers started upriver again circa 1850 transporting pelts mainly chinook salmon pelt inland via ice road leading down river past Medicine Hat/Lethbridge Alberta then Edmonton eastward finally reaching Georgian Bay outside Toronto!!!!!!!!
