Mundelein, Illinois is a small town located in the far northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Illinois. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census and 2,083 as of 2010. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is one of three municipalities in Cook County that are not part of Chicago but are administered by its own government. The name Mundelein comes from Kankakee word "munda" meaning 'fruit' and "lein" meaning 'village'. Mundelein was founded in 1838 by John A. Mundelein and his family on a tract of land purchased from John Larkin by Abraham Lincoln during his time as a legislator in the Illinois General Assembly. In 1848, it became a station on the Union Pacific Railroad and was renamed Mundelein after Governor Abraham LINCOLN's daughter Mary Jane (1811-1880). In 1872, it became an incorporated town under the name Mundelein with a population of 350 people. In 1912, Mundelein became part of Chicago when that city became an independent municipality. On December 4th, 1922, Mundelein lost its incorporation status when it passed into control of Cook County from Kane County pursuant to countyhood provisions contained in the First Amendment to the United States Constitution which applied only to former Indiana counties within Illinois." In 1938, mundelein had 1 storey building erected for their school system which still stands today used for dances & other functions
Mundelein was a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. It was located on the banks of the Des Plaines River. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. The Mundelein Canal and Navigation Company was founded in 1846 by Samuel Hegarty and his son-in-law George Bogan as a way to bring goods and passengers over the canal. The company grew into one of the largest transportation companies in Cook County. In 1871, the company merged with other transportation companies to form the Chicago, Milwaukee and Stroudsburg Railroad (CMSR). The railroad served as a major factor in Mundelein's growth until its closure in 1970. In 1925, Mundelein became one of only two communities in Cook County to receive city status when it was annexed by Chicago. In 1971, Mundelein's city government merged with that of Northbrook to form Northbrook City Corporation. In 1998, Northbrook City Corporation ceased operations due to budget cuts and folded itself into Chicago's Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) within Mayor Richard Daley's new firefighting agency, Chicago Department of Fire Protection (CDFP). Mundelein is now a part of Park Ridge neighborhood in Chicago Heights district along Waveland Avenue near I-294/I-794 exit 36A.
