Grant before becoming president. The first post office opened at Mundelein on November 15, 1837, and remained open until it closed on April 14, 1865 due to sieges by Native American forces during the Black Hawk War. A little more than two years after Swedish immigrant Erik Gustafsson arrived here October 10th1840 he erected his sawmill which continued until about 1865 when it was destroyed by icemelt floods due severe weather conditions unusual for that time period . After several failed attempts starting about 1840 Gustavus Wirth came ashore November 3rd with his wagonload o straw bales trying out this new method for generating power ..
