After the war, Mundelein experienced rapid growth as families moved into new homes and businesses created around downtowns such as Park Plaza and Midtown Center which were developed using proceeds from sales of municipal bonds that were used to finance these developments). The city's boundaries changed again when Kane County was formed on April 1st 1959 out of portions of Cook County including parts of Lombard and Willingboro townships (the former being annexed into Mundelein on January 1st 1960). The population reached 23,311 by 1984 but declined to 20,844 by 2010 due to various factors including suburbanization and retirements within the city limits while suburban areas grew rapidly around downtown while not incorporating much into Mundelein's core economy; however there has been recent progress with redevelopment plans currently under way for areas such as Midtown Center which would include both commercial space along withresidential units
