Mundelein, Illinois is a town in central Illinois that straddles the border of McLean County and Cook County. The population was 9,528 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McLean County. Mundelein was founded in 1836 as an unincorporated community on a bend in the La Salle River by Peter Mundelein and his family. In 1846, it became part of the newly organized Town of Rockford Township. The township was disbanded in 1857 when Rockford became a separate municipality. In 1872, Mundelein incorporated as a village and remained so until 1984 when it became an incorporated town again under the name Mundelein-Cooktown. On July 1, 2002, Mundelein adopted its current name - Mundelein-Andover Township - effective July 1, 2002 following approval from the board of commissioners. The change to township status reflected geographic separation from neighboring townships (Rockford and Andover) which are still part of McLean County and Cook County respectively. The history of Mundelein goes back to 1836 when Peter Mundleine established himself as an entrepreneur with three stores in what is now known as downtown: one for groceries, one for hardware and another for lumbering products In 1840 he married Sarah Howells and they had two children before moving to Rockford where they opened two more stores before Sarah gave birth to their third child who also died young at age six months old; this leftPeter with four mouths to feed which only increased his entrepreneurial spirit even further! He began looking into ways to combine his businesses into one entity but this idea never came to fruition because there were too many different types/branches/products within each store! However, during this time period he did meet John Witherspoon who would later be involved with building Rockford’s first hospital! In 1846 Petermundeine moved his family yet again - this time westward into what is now known as Round Valley where he opened a grocery store called “The Ark” on US Highway 27 Business (now US Highway 621). This venture failed miserably due to low sales but set the groundwork for future successes including another Grocery Store opening up on Mud Lake Road just east of town limits in 1850 named “The Post Office” which continued until 1922 when it closed due primarily to advertising restrictions put place by postmasters general! One notable event that took place here occurred on December 10th1856 when Native American Chief Winnebago stopped by The Ark while en route from Chicago downriver[4] This stop marked perhaps the beginningof some commercial interaction between Europeans and Native Americans which would continue through all phasesof America's history! A large water tower located on Main Street near today's high school served both local residents & visitors alike during prohibition years 1916 thru 1933; during prohibition tax assessors collected taxes not only from citizens but alsofrom business owners who operated their businesses inside or outside of their homes! Interestingly enough most law enforcement activity took place off street addresses rather thenon public property like government buildings!!! During prohibition days taverns such as "The Gilded Cage" were popular destinations for thirsty frontier men seeking relief from harsh winters & tough competition from adjacent farmers!!!!!! Prohibition ended however abruptly with statelegalization & implementation by President James K Polk late summer 1933 causing widespread disappointment among businessowners!! Mundaleinen experienced its heyday during World War I thanks largely theretofore unknown munitions manufacturer Munitions Research Company led by Mr JH Sanger located just east side OF town limits across la salle river; company produced shellshell underwear rationed at 2 pcs per week !! munition production ceased after armistice though continuing intermittently w/ occasional special orders !! munion research facility reopened circa 1940 following reclamation efforts sponsored by congressman frank meek III !! ammunition production resumed fully circa 1945!!!!! munitions research center closed permanently circa 1970 although limited operations continued thru 1990
