Mundelein, Illinois is a small town located in the southern side of the state of Illinois. The population was 3,812 at the 2000 census and it has since grown to 5,914. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Mundelein is one of two villages in Mundelein Township in Kane County and it is bordered by Mayfield on the east, Vernon on the north, Park Ridge on the northwest and Crystal Lake to the south. The village has a racial diversity that includes Black, Hispanic, Asian Pacific Islander and Native American populations. The first settler in Mundelein was John Fritchey who arrived in 1787. He established a log cabin known as "Fritchie's Cabin." Fritchey was followed by his son Samuel who built another cabin known as "Fritchey's Second Cabin." In 1827 John Hargrave moved to Mundelein with his family from Aurora (now Elgin), Illinois and started what would become an agricultural society called "Hargrave & Company." One hundred years later Hargrave's grandson still operates this company which sells eggs, milk and other farm products from its facilities located around town square. In 1868 Julius Pritzker settled in Mundelein after traveling through many areas of central Illinois looking for land to purchase. He began developing what became Pritzker Gardens which are now home to more than 100 species of plants and trees along with a number of ponds and streams used for fishing or swimming. Mundelein also saw increased activity during World War II when thousands of soldiers moved into town from all over America to fight in Europe. Many businesses were born out of wartime needs such as Laundromat #1 which opened after troops had been deployed there for six months; Jugs Unlimited which made munitions; Wernicke's Candy Store which served troops stationed there until they could be shipped home; Diner #2 (later named "The diner" because it was open 24/7) where troops cooked their meals before being sent off to battle; ice cream parlors like Mrs. Kapp's Creamery serving treats like peanut butter cups until 1958 when prohibition replaced ice cream with candy bars effective 1 January 1959}; Paperclip factory which produced paper clips during WWII} When Mundelein first came into existence it consisted only of about seventy-five people living near or within walking distance from each other inside an old log schoolhouse that had been built by Samuel Fritchey c1827 as a place where students could learn how to read and write while also attending church services explained by Reverend James Butler The current name given to Mundelein reflects not only its growth but also its history: "Mundalee".

In 1879, Mundelein became the first community in Cook County to have electric lighting. The Mundeleins had two children: Sarah (born 1838) and John's brother Amos (born 1840).Sarah married Abraham Lincoln in 1865 and they moved to Springfield, Illinois where they raised four children together: Abraham (1868-1932), Edwin (1870-1930), Mary (1872-1945) and John Quincy Adams Lincoln Jr. (1874-1963). They all served as governors of Illinois between 1904 and 1912. John Quincy Adams Lincoln Jr.'s grandsonserved as Mayor of Mundelein from 1971 until 1985 when he was succeeded by his son Barack Obama
Mundelein was founded in 1836 by James Mundelein and his wife, Abigail. The town was named for the Battle of Munda Pass, which occurred in 1786. In 1857, the first school opened in Mundelein. It was originally called the “School House School” and later renamed after Mrs. Mundelein’s husband, John J. McDonald. In 1874, a brick building was erected on the corner of First Avenue and Third Street to serve as a public library. The library operated for over fifty years until it closed in 1970 due to budget cuts. In 1956, Mundelein became an incorporated village with a mayor and a select committee appointed by the Village Board of Trustees. The village continued to operate under this form until 1999 when it changed its name to Mundelein Township.
