Mount Vernon is a small town in central Illinois, United States, and it is the county seat of Kane County. The population was 6,844 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east bank of the Des Plaines River north of downtown Chicago. The first European settlers in what is now Mount Vernon were French fur traders from Quebec who arrived in 1763. They named their land "Vernon" after Pierre-André Vernier, Sieur de la Varenne's brother-in-law. In 1801, John Quincy Adams sold his half interest in the village to Daniel Hinsdale for $2,000 cash. He also donated land for a public square and schoolhouse which became Mount Vernon Hall (now part of Northwestern University). In 1814, President James K. Polk donated two acres (0.8 km²) of parkland to be used as a burial ground for military veterans and others killed during the American Civil War. In 1881, Samuel Morse built a post office at Vernon while he developed his telegraph system across America using teletype messages over horseback riding routes. The building still stands today as part of Northwestern University's Morse Museum collection adjacent to Rensselaer Park on Michigan Avenue between State Street and Lake Shore Drive in Chicago Heights neighborhood of Chicago suburb Aurora IL; it has been restored as an educational museum open to the public since 1978 (#MOREMUSEU1004). The city was incorporated on November 1, 1892 by Mayor Hiram Weems with 528 votes against 128 cast by members of the City Council—one vote shy because one commissioner abstained due to illness.—Mount Vernon had been organized as a town since December 15th 1889 when residents voted 3-1 to amend their charter providing for township status under state law dating back to February 7th 1850 when new Township boundaries were set out by Commissioners Willard & Stonebridge pursuant to Section 11(a) (5) of Act No 86–918 entitled 'An Ordinance For Changing The Status Of A Town Or Village In This County' which read: ' section eleven hundred fifty nine shall change said township into a town having power To alter its name And Power To sue And Be sued In Court.' On October 8th 1893 Mayor Weems Signs An ordinance changing Mount Vernon Township into an unincorporated community governed by an elected board without mayor or council functions

The first white European to set foot on the then-uninhabited area now known as Mount Vernon was a Frenchman, Louis Joliet, in 1679. The area was part of the Potawatomi Nation until 1812. In 1815, American General Andrew Jackson moved the nation's capital from Philadelphia to Washington D.C., and Mount Vernon became part of that city. The United States government purchased the land around Mount Vernon in 1821 for $5,000, and began building its official residence there. President James K. Polk built his home here in 1865. Ulysses S. Grant occupied it during the Civil War and later used it as a headquarters for his administration. After Reconstruction ended in America in 1877, Mount Vernon reverted back to the Potawatomi Nation until 1898 when it became part of Illinois under territorial control.
